Sao Martinho do Porto area

Sao Martinho do Porto is a traditional fishing village with a naturally formed shell-shaped bay creating a sheltered swimming area with calm water and fine sand.

The best way to spend your days in Sao Martinho are to enjoy eating out with its many food offers and drink the famous green wine -vinho verde whilst enjoying the sun or sunset over the bay.

You will find fish and fresh vegetables at the daily market.

Peniche (with beautiful sandy beaches) - 25 mins drive.

Lisbon it's only an hour away by car or regular coach service and is a visit you shouldn't miss. Lisbon enjoys the best winter climate of any European city so it stays busy throughout the year. You can walk across the centre in half an hour and it's very beautiful. The hills of the Alfama (Castelo de Sao Jorge) and Bairro Alto are mazes of lanes and alleys - try the pastries (pasteis de nata) at the famous century Antiga fabrica dos pasteis de Belem bakery founded in 1837 next to the amazing Monastery of Jeronimos. Taxis are plentiful and cheap, but the old trams with wooden benches are great fun, offer better views, and are even cheaper.

Nothing is more Portuguese than port, and the Port Wine Institute (Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara 45) has every imaginable variety - ruby, white, tawny or vintage. It also offers wine by the glass.

How to get there

Lisbon Airport is recommended as it is an easy drive along the A8 taking between 50 mins to 1 hour depending on traffic.

If you don't want to hire a car then you can take a taxi from Lisbon airport to Lisbon bus station (15 Euros) and there is a direct regular coach service from there taking just over an hour (7 Euros each way).

Alternatively you can fly to Oporto (2.5 hour drive) or Faro (3.5 hour drive).
