The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast region
The best way to spend your days in Sao Martinho are to enjoy eating out with the incredibly cheap shellfish and drink the famous green wine -vinho verde whilst enjoying the sun or sunset over the bay. But if you want to venture out elsewhere here are our recommendations...
13th century walled medieval town of Obidos - 15 mins drive. Obidos Lagoon - 15 mins drive. Foz do Arelho beach (surfing) - 15 mins drive. Caldas Da Rainha (spa town) - 15 mins drive. Alcabaca Cathedral City- 20 mins drive. Praia D'El Rey - (famous golf course) 25 mins. Rated as the 13th best course in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine - lovely sea views.
Arblaster & Clarke (01730 263111, www.winetours.co.uk) Good-value port harvest tour, Douro vineyard walks and Azores gourmet week.
25 - 27 September 2009 - Witness, and even take part in the Port harvest offering the unique opportunity to experience treading the grapes!
6 - 12 September 2009 Douro Vineyard Walk - The walking is way off the beaten track and you’ll experience genuine rural Portugal seeing truly spectacular countryside.
There are other Wine tours running in May & June 2009 www.winetours.co.uk
Lisbon We recommend a day visit to Lisbon. It's only an hour away by regular coach service. Lisbon enjoys the best winter climate of any European city so it stays busy throughout the year. You can walk across the centre in half an hour and it's very beautiful with no skyscrapers. The hills of the Alfama and Bairro Alto are mazes of lanes and alleys - try the pastries at the Art-Nouveau cafés. Taxis are plentiful and cheap, but the old trams with wooden benches are great fun, offer better views, and are even cheaper.
Nothing is more Portuguese than port, and the Port Wine Institute (Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara 45) has every imaginable variety - ruby, white, tawny or vintage. It also offers wine by the glass.

Watersports Many watersports are available on the beach.
Supermarket There are a couple of small supermarkets in Sao Martinho itself. Larger hypermarkets are close by. A daily market opearted in the centre of Sao Martinho daily so you can pop out for fresh warm bread, cakes, meat, fish & veg.
Restaurants & Tourist Information There are lots of lovely restaurants which feature Portuguese food (with English translation on request) and there are Italian restaurants too. Portugal is the cheapest Westen European country so many holiday makers choose to eat out most nights.
Recommendations ACASA – Excellent service & fresh fish you can choose. CARVALHO – In Main st – Old Town centre. Level with the back of HOTEL ATLANTICA. Very good value. O'FAROL - located on the beach itself with the best views and good value. There is also a very good Swiss restaurant, a great Italian and a lovely bar to note- Pato No Prato.
Also try Hotel Capitao – afternoon tea on the veranda is accessed at the side/rear of the building and is wonderful!
