About the home

This superb detached family villa sleeps 8 comfortably, with a private swimming pool (6x4m), large patio and landscaped garden, 3 bathrooms, 2 balconies and a built in barbeque area for outdoor living. It is built to the highest standards, fully tiled, electric shutters, all modern appliances, giving you the perfect place to relax. The villa is in an exclusive estate, on the edge of the village. You can swim in your own pool or drive a short distance to the nearby sandy beach (1km). Other nearby beaches are the stunning Nazaré (8km/15 mins) and the famous Foz de Arelho (15 mins). The area is also dotted with smaller sandy beaches fronting onto the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, perfect for water surfing, kite surfing and other watersports. Large supermarket less than 5 minutes walk.

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region

Silver coast (Costa de Prata) has stunningly beautiful stretches of beach with not only the 3km of sandy beach at São Martinho do Porto but the beautiful beaches of Nazaré and Foz do Arelho nearby. The area is perfect to sightsee Portugal’s heritage in the many picturesque towns steeped in history, such as the must-see walled medieval town of Óbidos , put forward by Portugal in 2007 as one of the new 7 wonders of the world. The shops are perfect for browsing, piled high with local handicrafts, while in spring the town is ablaze with geraniums, morning glories and bougainvillaea. Alcobaça, inland to the North is a town dominated by a 12th Century Abbey, classified on UNESCO’s heritage list.

The weather on the silver coast is milder than in the South, allowing comfortable sleep at night as the temperature cools and the coastal breeze makes it more pleasant for children, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30ºC.

The Sao Martinho do Porto area

São Martinho do Porto is well known in Portugal for its 3km sandy beach and warmer than average water temperature. The shell shaped bay, which keeps the bay calm, is perfect for water sports and affords shelter to the local fishing boats. Boat trips to Nazaré are available in the harbour and boat fishing can be arranged. It has banks, a medical centre and chemist, a post office, shops, bars, cafés and a daily food market. The town has a lot of character and charm and its recently renovated long seafront is a perfect place to stroll or enjoy the view in a seafront café or bar.

The beach/harbour is a 5 minute drive from the house and as you exit the cul-de-sac you can turn right to head to the bustling town of Nazaré with its sandy dunes on its spectacular cliffside beach. There are endless stretches of beaches along the coast, each offering something different (Sao Martinho – calm and sandy with water sports, Foz do Arelho – expansive beach / shallow seas, Nazaré – wonderful dunes, cliffside beach with waves. The cliffs often hide secluded sandy beaches.

For those who want more culture the Silver Coast is rich in historical life with cathedrals and canals (Aveiro), churches, castles, fortresses (medieval Óbidos and Figueira da Foz) with many shops specialising in ceramics, pottery, artistic tiles, embroidery and colourful handicraft items. There is much to see and do, allowing for a much more wider holiday experience than sun, sea and beach. São Martinho is a great base from which to visit the great abbeys of Batalha and Alcobaça and the well known pilgrimage of sanctuary at Fátima (50km).

For day trips a visit to Peniche (largest harbour in Portugal and most westerly town in Europe) slightly further South and the Berlengas archipelago Islands (visible from the hills at São Martinho, nature reserve) are ideal and nearby Caldaz da Rainha (spa town) is a 15 minute drive with lots of shops in its bustling town.

Aveiro to the North has a famous lagoon and is criss-crossed with canals, and the attractions of Lisbon are an hours drive (100km).

The nearest golf courses are at Praia de Rey, Rio Maior, Vimeiro and Peniche. São Martinho also has a bus and train service, tourist information and timetables are available in the villa.

Lisbon Airport is 1 hour drive, Porto airport is two hours and Faro airport is two and a half hours.
