The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
Possibly the most famous fishing town in Portugal, Nazaré is unique in many ways. It doesn't contain the architectural treasures or grandiose monuments prevalent in other Portuguese towns, but it has an atmosphere of times gone by, contentment and traditions which continue to thrive, which make it a special place to visit.
Nazaré is split into three main districts – Praia (beach), Pederneira and Sitio. Located on a rocky promontory over 100m above the main part of the town, Sitio provides wonderful views over the bay and beach of Nazaré, and from here the walker can continue northward along the stretches of beach where the Atlantic regularly pounds creating ideal conditions for many a shore fisher to cast a line. Although this mainly residential part of Nazaré is accessible by car, by far more interesting is the funicular carriage which takes passengers up the sharp slope for a small fee. A winding path also exists but is perhaps more appealing on the way down! Once at the top, besides the views one finds a large church and also a small chapel clinging to the edge of the sheer drop, the Ermida da Memória, whose origins are closely connected to the miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary.
Foz Do Arelho & Nadadouro
Sitting at the edge of the beautiful turquoise 'Obidos' lagoon these quaint fishing villages still have all the traditional fishermen in their flat-bottomed boats and their catch of prawn, clams and crabs are sold in the local restaurants. Although it is now a protected natural heritage site there are still all the water-based leisure facilities you could wish for as well as surf bars, beach bars, night clubs. Foz do Arelho and Nadadouro have long been the wealthy Lisbon persons choice and their 'weekend' houses around the lagoon certainly live up to that reputation. Building is now quite restrictive to protect the nature of the lagoon. 5mins northwest of Caldas da Rainha.
Caldas da Rainha
Every day Caldas da Rainha has a lively bustling market in the town square. Return to the old world of the food with real flavours- the freshest local and regional produce including vegetables, fruit, nuts, cheese, chickens, flowers, sausages and fresh-baked cakes. The cobbled side streets are excellent for clothes shopping with branches of Mango and Etxart & Panno and other well-known retailers.
There are dozens of shoe, sports, lingerie, kids, casual and perfume shops and an excellent cinema with new-release films in English shown at the same time as the UK.
It has an attractive park with a boating lake and children's playground.
Considered to be one of the jewels of Portugal's national heritage, Óbidos was once the favourite retreat of King Sancho I and was a wedding gift from King Diniz to Queen Isabel. Its unspoilt beauty is retained in its narrow cobbled streets and elegant whitewashed buildings with balconies brimming with flowers. Óbidos has dozens of restaurants, bars and cafes as well as open air opera in the old town square, music festivals and our favourites, the medieval feasts and the chocolate festival! 5 mins southwest of Caldas da Rainha. Fine wine area the most famous being Gaerias and a traditional Obidos liqueur known as ginja which is drunk from a tiny chocolate cup! Heaven!.
Superb monastery, large square lined by cafés and restaurants.
Although surrounded by unattractive modern developments, the walled old town is very pleasant. Still and active fishing port, it also the start point of the ferry to the nearby nature reserve islands Ilhas Berlengas. There is also an imposing 16th century fortress.
There is a water park as you drive into Peniche that is open during the summer months.
For surfers the nearby resort of Baleal is a must!
Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros
Stretching south from Porto de Mós, the Parque is a limestone range that rises into high plateaus and peaks and sinks into huge depressions. The park is famous for its caves, but above ground is spectacular too – hills covered in gorse and olive groves are divided by dry-stone walls and threaded by cattle trails, offering good walks. You can also see a well preserved stretch of Roman Road.
For caves there are the Mira de Aire Caverns and the Grutas de Alvas & Grutas de Santo António Caverns which are quite huge and dramatic!
In this area you can also see the Dinosaur Footprints. The 175million year old prints are the oldest and longest sauropod tracks in the world, stretching for 147 metres. These are 9km east of N360 running south of Fatima, follow the brown signs marked 'Pegadas da Serra de Aire'
Sao Martinho do Porto
Salir do Porto Village and beach
This is just a short walk of just under a kilometre, here there is an open air public swimming pool, a cafe and a restaurant and the largest sand dune you have ever seen!
You can walk into Sao Martinho do Porto from here along the boardwalks across the dunes.
São Martinho do Porto is located 100km north of Lisbon,
Since the beginning of the century, the thin sands beach of the shell shaped bay, attracts tourists.
There is a little hotel, an apartments hotel, some residentials and pensions, camping parks and guest houses.
Many people from Lisbon come here for the weekend.
The restaurants have many fish specialties and sea fruits specialties.
We have a daily market (except Mondays).
The terraces, cafes and bars are very inviting and relaxing.
Centuries ago the bay reached Alfeizerão. It is said that Julius Ceaser passed here. Our first King Afonso Henriques, gave this land to the Cister Monks in the XII century. They used it as sea port to transport wood form the pine forest of Leiria. This wood was also used to ship building.
All across the bay, there's Salir do Porto where in those years they extracted salt. There was also a sea port and a shipyard. The ruins of a medieval Customs House can still be visited.
Although the bay has fish and sea fruits, there's only a few fisherman. Tourists prefer, swimming, surf, sailing, rowing or just enjoy the beach.
