The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region

Places of interest close to Salir do porto

Obidos – an essential must-see! A UNESCO World Heritage medieval walled town, crowned by a castle. Take time to wander off the beaten track and around the town walls, and stop in one of the small bars to try the famous cherry liqueur.

Jardim Oriental da Quinta dos Loridos / Budhha Garden – Must be seen to be believed! The Buddha Eden Garden is set within the lush grounds of the famous Quinta dos Loridos and has hundreds of marble and granite Buddhas, terracotta soldiers (each unique) and various oriental sculptures of all descriptions and sizes (you’ll find out what we mean!). It really is quite something and it’s free (although a donation is appreciated) and open 7 days a week. Exit 12 on the A8 then follow the signs for about 2km.

Caldas da Rainha – Take the opportunity to visit the local daily market or the museum and ceramics factory of the famous Bordalo Pinheiro (15 min). www.cm-caldas-rainha.pt

NorPark – Water park fun near Nazare

The Dinosaur Museum in Lourinhã. This excavation site is one of the most important in Europe and is still actively used by archaeologists (15 mins south). www.museulourinha.org

Other places of interest include: Alcobaca (a magnificent abbey and monastery), Batalha (beautiful abbey), Fatima (The Lourdes of Portugal) and Castelo de Almoural (Knights Templar castle on an island)

Limestone Caves - In the State Park (Parque National dos Servos de Aime Candeiros) there a number of limestone caverns to explore. The largest and most impressive is Grutas de Mira de Aire near Fatima and the A1 on the N243 (45mins).

Berlengas Islands – Boat trips to the Berlengas islands off Peniche are available (40 mins). There you will find a national nature reserve and an untouched marine habitat great for scuba diving along with an impressive fort, in which you can stay over night (although you’ll need to book with the Tourist office in Peniche).

Lisbon – Worthwhile visit (and supposedly the cheapest capital in Western Europe). Make sure you visit the Bairro Alto district (on the hill opposite the castle) along with the avenues of Baixa and the castle.

Estoril/Cascais – We highly recommend parking at Estoril or Cascais and viewing the elegant villas and cosmopolitan atmosphere before catching the train into Lisbon (3,30€ return) and look out for the Cristo Rei statue overlooking the port. www.freeport.pt

Parques das Nacoes (Park of Nations) – The futuristic architecture on the east of Lisbon’s waterfront was built for Expo98 and is in complete contrast to the city’s old quarters. The main highlight is the Oceanarium, a state-of-the-art oceanarium. Other attractions include a modern cable car, the eye-catching Oriente Station, a marina, water gardens and many bars & restaurants overlooking the Vasco da Gama Bridge, one of the longest in the world (get the park card for many discounts). www.parquesdasnacoes.pt

Baleal – Two beaches either side of a picturesque headland with café/bars.

South Baleal – A large bay offers miles of beach all the way to Peniche. Surrounded by sand dunes there are numerous car parks.

Lagide – North of Baleal there is a beach popular with surfers because of the reef break.

Praia d’el Rey – A lovely sandy beach stretches for miles, set between the Atlantic Ocean and impressive sandstone cliffs.

Cortico – The far end of Praia d’el Rei and less crowded but just as beautiful.

Foz do Arelho – A very popular beach with the local Portuguese, set on the estuary of the lagoon with many bars and cafés. You can collect clams from the pools that are left in the sand when the tide goes out - a free dinner!

Nazare – The largest resort in the area with a popular sandy bay.

Areia Branca – A pleasant seaside town with a pleasing beach to match, south of Peniche.

Sao Martinho do Porto

Unlike south of portugal the temperature never gets very hot. A cool breeze cools the place in the Summer and is very pleasant, especially if you have young kids. There are numerous beaches within easy reach of the apartment, between them they have miles of golden sand, fantastic surfing and quiet sandy bays offering safe swimming for the children.

The area of Salir do porto is a quiet town next to sao martinho do porto with friendly natives

Sao Martinho – Semi-circular bay with only small opening to the sea, offering warmer, calmer waters. There’s a relaxing atmosphere and some beach front café/bars.

Shops and cafes and bars

Bread van beeps horn around 11 or 12 every day. They have a selection of rolls and breads and sweet things

Fish van also beeps down the road every day at various times in the morning

Vegetable van every few days comes but is up the road most days at a small market ( right up the road then left, continue 100 metres.

Continue on and you see a wooden walkway which brings you around to san martinho.

For local affordable and delicious food . ( 3 minutes by car or walk in 20 mins) Take left out the gate right at bottom of road. At roundabout, go straight through and continue over the train tracks. First restaurant on right serves big portions and is very reasonable. After that restaurant on left is another that you can eat outside in gazebo style huts. Speciality is wild pig. Also very reasonable.

The restaurant/BBQ up in the square is close, reasonable and highly recommended.

"Beautiful views, 2 mins walk to beach . Very nice apartment"

Stayed a week in Salir. Great spot near the beach. Garden in front of veranda, we could sit and look at the stunning views over the bay in the evening. Beach literally, 2 mins walk down the little hill.! Really peaceful here, small village, few bars and shops up and down the hill.
walled garden to keep the kids in so happy with that.
