The Algarve / East Algarve region
The Algarve offers guaranteed sunshine, stunning countryside and coastline, excellent food and wine, UNESCO world heritage sites, lively historic villages, and as much activity as you want.
This area is particularly popular with golfers who enjoy an all year-round play in a fabulous climate. Further more, they have 30 high-class golf courses to choose from.
Other activities in the area include an array of watersports such as surfing and sailing or take a boat trip along the picturesque coast. Alternatively, head inland to hike in beautiful pine forests. The Serra de Monchique hill trails will reward you with stunning views as you make your way to the Algarve’s highest point. Bring your own or hire bikes locally, whilst birdwatchers will enjoy an array of species.
For those who are after culture, The Algarve has a number of sites reflecting its history which includes Roman and Arab invasions. Medieval churches abound in the historical villages which often have colourful markets. The Tavira area is relatively untouched and remains typically Portuguese plus there’s picturesque islands and beaches waiting to be discovered.
All this plus a countryside full of peaceful olive groves, long-standing vineyards and farms which have been worked for generations.
Sao Bras de Alportel area
São Brás de Alportel is to the north of Faro, in the Barrocal region of the Algarve. Enjoy exploring the town and visit the church then take a drive into the hills above São Brás de Alportel where there are tiny hamlets of a handful of houses nestled into the hillside amongst the cork and almond trees.
It shows the Algarve untouched by tourism. It is also an area where many of the original handicrafts still survive -wrought iron work, hand made wooden toys, basket weaving and more.
In and around Sao Bras there are old church, museums, archaeological sites and beautiful nature walks.
Loule is nearby (7kms) and is an active market town with some remains of an Arab castle dating back to the 12th Century. Like most other towns in the Algarve, most of the older potentially interesting buildings were destroyed in the earthquake in 1755, but there are still cobbled streets and characteristic houses waiting to be discovered.
The market hall, with its classic Moorish red onion dome, is home to the Saturday market which is a ‘must see’ for its array of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. There are also local artisans producing copper ware, leather, cane, lace and wood products.
The annual Carnival held towards the end of February and is considered to be one of the best in Portugal, attracting thousands of visitors from across the Algarve. Based on religious origins, the parade of floats winds its way to the hilltop church to the west of the town is built on the site of a 16th Century chapel. There’s also the ‘Battle of the Flowers’ adding to the festivities.
How to get there
Full driving details and maps will be provided on booking - the villa is easily reached from the main road from the airport.
Pretty much all airlines have some service to Faro including - BA, AirBerlin, Ryanair, Easyjet and Monarch, Aer Lingus, Thomson, Globspan etc all run a good schedule of flights to Faro. I recommend a website www.skyscanner.net to see the best price for your flights, it is a very easy and compact site that loads up all airlines departing from your airport of choice with the times and most importantly the cost.
I can arrange car hire for you at very competitive rates - please email for the current costs for car rental.
A fun web site to use is www.wunderground.com it is a 'weather site' that has historical weather data for Faro and also a 'trip planner' option that gives you a really good idea of what type of weather to expect when you are on holiday.

Guestbook for Villa Innishee
Thanks for the most relaxing week I think we have had in the Algarve. We took your advice for the various day trips you recommended and think we really made the most of our time here in the Algarve. We will be recommending you to our family and friends - and maybe too we will be back in summer to spend some long lazy days by the pool and take in more of the amazing scenery. Thanks Again Mr & Mrs P.B. Cardiff
