The Algarve region
The Algarve is renowned for its mild winters and hot summers. The Moorish influence is still clearly visible in its architecture, and there are lots of historical points of interest to explore.
There is something for everyone here, whether you are interested in history, nature, culture, are a beach lover, have kids that love water parks, play golf, like horseriding, love shopping, or just need to take time out and get away from it.
The coastal strip with well-known towns like Albufeira and Vilamoura is highly developed and tourist-orientated, whereas the inland region seems like a world away, and some of the smaller villages tucked away in the hills still have that underdeveloped rural charm.
Sao Bras de Alportel
The small town of S. Bras nestles in hills of cork trees, whitewashed houses, almond trees (almond blossom time: around last week in January), fig and carob trees.
This unspoilt hilly hinterland of the Algarve offers you a holiday away from the tourist crowds with peace and quiet. Villa Holanda is about 4 km from the small town of S. Bras where you will find well-stocked supermarkets, restaurants, street cafés, banks and post office. S. Bras and the larger town of Loulé (8 km) are a special shopping experience, you can still find some smaller individual shops, market halls offering daily fresh vegetables and fruit, fish and meat, and weekly gypsy markets.
Take a seat in one of the many street cafés, enjoy reasonable prices, the tempting traditional cakes and sweets, and the unhurried lifestyle and colourful atmosphere.
The local museum takes you into the history of S. Bras as the cork-producing capital of the world, and has a lively programme of music and cultural events (www.cm-sbras.pt, www.amigos-museu-sbras.org). The Easter Sunday procession with its flower petal carpeted streets is a famous event and a must-see.
Eating out in this part of the Algarve is a low-cost pleasure, traditional Portuguese restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood, hearty stews or the famous Chicken Piri-Piri. S. Bras now boasts Chinese, Italian and Indian restaurants as well, most do carry-outs so you could still dine alfresco on your terrace without cooking.
Restaurants on the coastline have a more Northern European price level. Some 5-star eateries can be found here for that special night out.
The prized Algarve beaches and some of the most famous golf courses (the Golden Triangle – Quinta do Lago, Vale de Lobo and Vilamoura courses) are only 25 minutes away by car. Thanks to easy access to the motorway, you can explore the Algarve from East to West. The motorway can also take you to Spain and the town of Ayamonte in 40 minutes - another cultural and culinary experience, or into Seville in 2 hours. Thanks also to the new fast rail link, you could squeeze in a day trip to Lisbon, or instead you can choose to stay at home and soak up the tranquil surroundings.
The owner of Villa Holanda has been living in the Algarve some 20 years and is resident in the neighbouring house. She would be pleased to give you local tips (if desired) and help you make your holiday a success.

"Fabulous - met all our expectations"
This villa is exactly as advertised - only better. Well situated in the hills with a lovely view towards Faro. Gudrun met us at the airport, led us to the villa and provided an excellent welcome pack including cold chicken supper with a nice Portuguese wine and a delightful home-made banana cake. The large table on the veranda allows al fresco eating with a beautiful view. The pool was clean and has inflatables, loungers, and a shady area around it. There is easy car access to Sao Bras de Alportel for supermarket shopping and interesting markets for fresh bread and veg and access to the Rota da Cortica (Cork historic route). Visit Fonte Férrea near Sao Bras for a peaceful walk in the woods. The roman villa at Milreu was nearby and for a longer day out, a visit to Ayamonte in Spain by ferry is essential.

We have returned from a 10 day holiday at Villa Holanda & wish we were still there ! The villa is very well appointed with everything you could possibly need & has views to die for looking down towards the sea. Gudrun, the owner, could not have been more welcoming or helpful & quickly made us feel totally at home . Car hire is essential to get to a number of good restaurants nearby & to explore the town of Sao Bras. If you wish to find a lovely spot with plenty of peace & quiet & a high quality villa this is the peace for you.

"Peace & quiet, a view of outstanding beauty and the most friendliest owner you could wish for, Fantastic."
A villa you dream about and not find very often. The view over the pool while having breakfast is the best start to the day you could wish for. Lunch with a beer then an afternoon nap, bliss. Then g & ts while watching the lights give you a show over the valley and down to the coast, your in heaven. The owner is the nicest lady and so helpfull, made everything so easy from hiring a car to telling you where to eat and lots more. The pool is great, the villa clean and well appointed. Hope we can go again very soon.

"Peace and quite, and a perfect place to relax."
We stayed at Villa Holanda for 10 nights end of September beginning of October , which enjoyed very much. The villa itself is in a lovely location, if you are looking for peace and quite you would not go wrong with this villa. It is very close to Sao Bras, which has a verity of shops, & restaurants, and the fact that the owner lives just down the hill is very helpfully, and the meet and greet service at Faro Airport is a very good idea, the villa has all of the facilities that you would need, with a annex/apartment at the side of the villa is a very good idea for larger families, or families with different generations traveling together. The gardens are very well kept, and the swimming pool was of a good size, even though we travelled later into the summer season we took advantage of the pool heating which was quite a reasonable cost. We did enjoy our stay and we would return in the future.

"Excellent villa with exceptional views"
The experience started with an easy booking and helpful information from Gudrun- the owner- who met us at the airport and eased our booking with the car hire company and led us to the villa personally. The villa is near to Sao Bras and Loulle for shops and local culture but has a spectacular view down the valley to Faro and the sea. Centrally positioned for the south east of Algarve it is well appointed with a great pool and poolside gazebo for the hotter days. We loved the villa and can higly recommend it and we will be back!

My family and I - husband and 2 teenage boys have just returned from Villa Holanda and have had the best time EVER. The villa was spacious, comfortable and with views to die for. The pool was larger than previous pools that we have used and the area around the pool was plenty. The owner -Gudrun is really friendly and has plenty of knowledge of the surrounding area. In fact our holiday was so perfect we have just booked to go back again for our annual holiday next year and cannot wait to be waking up to fantastic views that great you at Villa Holanda. "Comfortable, well appointed villa for a relaxing family holiday"
This year was our return trip to the villa. It is clean, comfortable and equipped with everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Gudrun extends a warm welcome and is friendly but not intrusive. The villa has amazing panoramic views across the surrounding countryside to the sea. We like to sit on the terrace with a book and a bottle of wine and watch the sunset. A hire car is a must for getting around to the nearby supermarkets and into Sao Bras though they are easy to get to. Gudrun booked ours and it was the best rate available. There are restaurants near by. Do go to 'Chicken Luis'' for peri peri chicken but get there before 7pm for a seat. The Indian restaurant in Sao Bras is well worth a visit.

"Excellent location and facilities"
This was our second stay at Villa Holanda, and it was every bit as good as our first. The location of the villa is very convenient and there are stunning views of the valley to the sea. The villa offers great privacy and the pool is large and suitable for all ages. The facilities are superb and the owner is exceptionally helpful and welcoming. We definitely plan to return for another holiday and strongly recommend Villa Holanda.

"Best Villa we have stayed in by far!"
Perfect location for a relaxing holiday with outstanding views and a pool you don't want to leave! We were a family of 2 adults and 3 kids with Grandparents also visiting for a week (ages from 8 - 75) and all agreed it was the best family holiday we have had. Thanks to Gudrun for being a very kind host - the house has everything you could possibly need - very comfortable and homely. The area is wonderfully peaceful and relaxing but if you get bored by the pool you can easily be where all the action is on the coast within easy 45 mins drive -waterparks/nightlife etc. Sao Bras itself has everything you could need including local market and plenty choice of restaurants. Would highly recommend for relaxing holiday in wonderful surroundings. Thanks again Gudrun - we hope to be back!

"Fabulous villa on idyllic hillside setting."
Villa Holanda was a marvelous home away from home for our family group of 5 for four days while attending a wedding in the Algarve. This lovely, clean villa is located on a quiet hillside in Sao Bras de Alportel overlooking the coastal town of Faro - the location is a perfect "home base" to explore the entire southern coast of Portugal. Gudrun, the owner who lives just down the hill, was there to meet us on our arrival and not only gave us a tour of the property (accompanied by her two friendly dogs, Teddy & Chico), but also led us on a brief driving tour of Sao Bras. She was always willing to answer questions and offer assistance, and even arranged a taxi to drive us to and from the wedding we attended in nearby Tavira so we didn't need to worry about the driving. The written description and photos of the property online are spot-on accurate - the rental even includes a starter pack of food staples and beverages including some of Gudrun's mouth-watering home-made banana bread. Although there was ample room indoors for our group,we spent the majority of our "villa time" out on the spacious balcony and on the deck by the pool. This villa was perfect for our family and we heartily recommend it to anyone.
