About this location
The Algarve region
Quinta San Antonio nestles on a lush, herb covered hillside between the coast and the mountains near to the market towns of Loule and Sao Bras de Alportel. This is the secret heart of the Algarve where wild almond, fig and pomegranate trees grow around villages whose simple charms and whitewashed houses give the feeling of having stepped back in time. There are numerous small towns and fishing villages on the coast between Faro and the Spanish border – particularly worth visiting is Olhao, which is renowned for its fish market and numerous seafood restaurants, and the elegant town of Tavira with its roman bridge spanning the water and riverside restaurants.
There is lots of water parks and entertainment for children – the Waterslide Park at Quarteira and the very popular Zoomarine at Guia which is close to Albufeira, where there are dolphin displays, seals and sea lions and fascinating tropical birds.
There is an Equestrian Centre a few minutes walk away.
Sao Bras de Alportel
Sao Bras has an Intermarche supermarket (that also sells newspapers and caters for English taste) and a farmers market on Saturdays where you can buy fruit, vegetables and seafood. The local village, Alportel, is only a few minutes walk with its bars, church and village shop. A short walk leads to a local beauty spot - Fonte Ferrea - which is as yet to be discovered by tourists. This is an oasis of calm with its picnic area, fresh water springs, cafe, cork and eucalyptus trees. Only eight kilometers away is the pretty town of Loule with its Medieval castle and historic centre, much of which has retained its original charm. The narrow alleys of the old town are full of potters, saddlers and coppersmiths and a covered market selling seafood, fruits and vegetables alongside locally made pottery. On Saturday's the town is vibrant with its market spilling into the surrounding streets and alleyways. A great opportunity to buy sardines, dried fruit and local game. There is a large Continente supermarket – Portugal's answer to Sainsburys! Most supermarkets are open Monday to Saturday (9am to 10pm) and until 1pm on Sundays. For those missing a little "retail therapy", the Algarve Forum is the perfect place to buy well known brands (Zara, Pull & Bear etc) at much reduced prices compared to the U.K.
