House | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 8
Casa Camoes is now available for carefree simple holidays....with that all important swimming pool! A detached village house in Poco dos Ferrerios ( The Farriers Well ) about 20 minutes from Faro airport by car and 15 minutes to Loule and a few minutes from Sao Bras d'Alportel. The village is typical of the area with local residents and visitors all year around. The rural villages aound Sao Bras d' Alportel are awash with traditional farming activities and traditions and quite unspoiled in comparison to the more developed towns and villages along the coastal strip of the Algarve.
This is the place to holiday when you would rather see than be seen, listen than be heard and relax rather than be entertained. Opposite Casa Camoes, beside the village well, Signora Vitalina sells homegrown fruit and vegetables and there is an excellent restaurant to walk to in this tucked away valley close to Sao Bras D' Alportel, with another in the neighbouring village and all shopping needs met in the local market town five minutes bike ride away.
The layout of bedrooms, three downstairs and upstairs , one very large airconditioned room that can be used as a Yoga Studio or Chillax space or similar ( I use it for therapy groups and great dinners!) with balcony upstairs is also ideal for friends and family . The external staircase is steep though so upstairs is not suitable for infants or the infirm. Generally, think country cottage rather than swanky villa! ....well, except for the pool terrace, which was redesigned last year and now provides a lovely outlook over our Fig Orchard.

The Algarve region
Blessed with a beautiful climate, sparkling resorts, easy access throughout the year and a cheerful, resourceful people, the Algarve is a favoured holiday destination.
Within half an hour you can be swimming in the sea or walking the hills, sipping good coffee or buying fish fresh from the boats, swimming in your own pool or gathering figs or strawberries from the market. ...and of course dont forget the Golf!
For active people there are year round sporting opportunities and for those looking to relax and immerse themselves in local culture there is more than enough to keep everyone happy.
We have a house here because it is a friendly place to return to, the food is truly great and...we can drive or fly here anytime of the year....and the wine is pretty good too!
Sao Bras de Alportel
The Bishops of Portugal used to spend the summer months here in Sao Bras believing that the air was especially good for them, perhaps a result of bordering thousands of acres of forest going up into the hills behind and its elevated position providing wonderful views over the coastal plain.
The countryside is lovely, brimming with local traditional crafts from honey making to basket weaving and embroidery to cork production . A visit from here to the more inland village of Cachapo , is worthwhile. This is a great location for touring the Eastern and Central Algarve . Historic Tavira is a scenic half hour drive, and the markets of Loule the coast are very atmospheric. There is a museum depicting local life in the town and some very pleasant restaurants...Chicken Luis, a notable lunchtime highlight.
The hills are dotted with goats and Almond trees and the locals tend to 'freewheel' from the town down to the coastal city of Faro only bothering to re - engage their gearbox for the return journey. The town is the gateway to the rural hinterland and a refreshing and authentic place. People know their neighbours here.

"Sunshine, Sangria and Serendipity"
Firstly, I have to say that Faro was the friendliest airport I have travelled to, with genuine smiles all around. And I've passed through more than a few, where they're not: not really!
And that happy feeling grew, the longer I spent in the charming landscape that surrounds this very pleasant residence.
The casa soon becomes a home from home, with a touch of luxury; and the swimming pool-with its nearby outside dining area is bliss for both breakfasts and lazy evening dining.
Close by is a small local shop, providing necessary items; and there's a fish van calling every week. No need to go hungry, if you decide to linger away from the road that leads to the excellent supermarkets, just a few miles away.
My whole experience was, truly, holistic, because there is such peace, here; and everything a visitor needs in space, comfort and amenities.
When we did go travelling, all was an adventure with some memorable conversations with both native Portuguese or expatriates.
I didn't feel the need to bring back souvenirs, except for a pot of honey in a distinctive orangy-brown jar, with a pointy top.
Agriculture, and the way we grow our food is a big Issue, right now- as it always should be-particularly with the overuse of pesticides, and their dire effects on birds, bees and butterflies. A visit to a local market took me back to when more of us earned our livings from rural pursuits; and this, as much as anything, made me feel very much at home in Portugal.
So, in having the best of both worlds, each fitting into a very harmonious jigsaw, I can say "hand on heart" that this one was very special stay.
As I headed to my flight, a man at the gate asked if I had enjoyed my stay. I said: "It was the best."
With a big smile, he said: "We want you to come back," and blew a kiss.
You can't beat the human touches!

"a little piece of paradise"
We had a fabulous time at casa camoes . Our teenagers enjoyed the separate upstairs space and we enjoyed the peaceful location , great pool area and relaxed atmosphere of Sao Bras. There is something for everyone with golf, beaches, great shopping, markets and site seeing on your doorstep.
The pool area had just been redone before we arrived and it is fantastic ! We also had some great meals out at local restaurants - and an overnight stay in Seville for a culture fix.
We will be back - what a great holiday location
