About this location
The Algarve region
Sao Bras de Alportel is the main region for cork production and its history is steeped in agriculture. The town is busy, but not frantic, not too many tourists, but lots of really reasonably priced restaurants and cafes and a lovely traditional museum. A visit to the local market for the fresh produce is delightful - but if you're in a hurry Sao Bras has many excellent supermarkets too. If you like country settings, wild flowers, rare bird species, hiking, biking, pony trekking and beautiful fresh air A Casa do Campo is an easy and leisurely 10 minute drive away - no need for stressful motorways.
Sao Bras has a spectacular Easter Parade and people come from all parts of the region to join in and the Spring wild flowers put on their own extravagant show before the heat sets in during mid-May.
There are numerous mountain trails to explore and picnic areas near dams for a day out in the country by A Casa do Campo.
Conversely the fabulous Portuguese fishing ports and wonderful markets of Olhao and Tavira are within 20 minutes and easy to get to.
It can rain a lot in winter - but when it doesn't the sun during the day is lovely and one can sunbathe in a sheltered spot. Light the fire by 3.30 p.m., though as the evenings are chilly. Even in April this can be the case. Summers are hot! But in the mountains there is always a light cooling breeze.
Sao Bras de Alportel
The Eastern Algarve is the quieter part but no less attractive for that. But a trip out west is easy as the motorway takes you to Lisbon in 2.5 hours, or East to Seville in 1.5 hours . So city culture is accessible. Some people like to take a mini break to Gibraltar which can be done in 3 hours
Recommended places: west to the traditional spa town of Monchique also up in the mountains where they make interesting bent wooden furniture; the historic castle town of Silves on the river is lovely and of course the most westerly point in Europe, Sagres is good to go to - the next land being America.
More centrally, Lagos, Portimao, Ferragudo have ports, beaches, harbours, fish restaurant and lots of historic buidings and pleasant streets to meander. Nearer to home the university town of Loule has a wonderful market and lots of shops and things to look at.
East: already mentioned is Tavira and Olha; Santa Luzia is another little fishing village and has a little train to take people to the very popular Barril beach on the landspit across the Ria Formosa protected reserve.
