The Aegean Islands region

Santorini is located in the middle of the Greek Islands of the Aegean Sea and is one of the most famous holiday destinations in Greece. The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world, around 1600 BC and some say that this led to the demise of the lost city of Atlantis.

What remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera, where architectural complexes of underground rock- hewn houses still survive into the volcanic soil. The Caldera and the whole cluster of the Santorini islands have been characterized as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Reflecting the island's exceptional geological make up, Santorini offers an array of unique white and red sandy beaches in addition to different pebbled beaches that feature a variety of colors reflecting in the sea's waters.

Other Interesting Information

The island of Santorini or Thira/ Thera, is known for the mystique energy, the famous caldera, the legendary volcano, the romantic sunsets, the interesting gastronomy, the wineyards, the nightlife on the island is ideal for all visitors, since it combines quiet cafes and bars with intense nightlife entertainment in bars and clubs.

Santorini is an ideal choice for travellers seeking a luxury, unique experience consisting of historic sightseeing, for their vacation. The volcanic cliffs of Santorini are red, brown or greenish, surmounted by a string of white villages.

Santorini

Villa Ivi is located in Megalochori, one of the most beautiful and traditional villages of Santorini. Sheltered from the Cycladic winds, the traffic – free white streets of Megalochori village provide a peaceful and sought after alternative to the busiest tourist centres of Santorini, Fira and Oia. Megalochori's location in the centre of the island is the ideal springboard to enjoy the attractions of Santorini Island, the famous sunset, the wineries, the local cuisine and the sea.

Megalochori's existence is recorded back to the 17th century.

Home to historical mansions, old traditional houses, pirate hideaways and wine canavas, it has a history of merchants and wealthy land barons exporting Vinsanto wine that the island still produces. A prominent feature of the historical homes and mansions are the high walls, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, built for privacy and for safety against marauding pirates.

A great effort is been made by local residents and businessmen to preserve the characteristics and beauty of this traditional settlement, and many of the original houses that had fallen into disrepair, have been restored to their former glory.

In the center of the village, there a wonderful traditional square with taverns, restaurants and trees providing shade for a quick cup of coffee. The square is the heart and soul of Megalochori, a gathering place for the locals to play a game of cards or 'tavli' (backgammon). Spiraling out in all directions is a maze of winding cobbled streets and smooth edge pathways, just waiting to be discovered.
