The Aegean Islands region

The Cyclades are a group of islands in the Aegean Sea with latitudes between the 36th and 38th parallel and longtitudes between the 24th and 26th meridians. The layout of the islands is in two parallel lines from Cape Sounio and Evia, which distinguish the West from the East Cyclades and together form the Cycladic Prefecture. The population of the prefecture is 112.600 according to the 2001 census and the chief town is Ermoupolis in Syros.

The name was given by the ancient geographers due to their circular layout around the holy islands of Delos (the birthplace of the gods Artemis and Apollo), whereas the other Aegean islands were known as the Sporades.

The Cycladic Islands starting from the largest are Naxos, Andros, Paros, Tinos, Milos, Kea, Amorgos, Ios, Kythnos, Mykonos, Syros, Thira aka Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Anafi, Kimolos, Antiparos, Folegandros, Makronissos, Iraklia, Gyaros, Polyegos, Keros, Rinia, Donousa, Thirasia, Schoinousa, Koufonisia and Delos as well as the complex of Antiparos and the islands of Makares on the east side of Naxos.

The six small islands between Amorgos and Naxos form the small Cyclades. These are the Koufonisia (Upper and lower Koufonisi), Iraklia, Schoinousa, Donousa & Keros

Santorini

The world famous island of Santorini is a yearly award winner of the world's "best island" and “most desired destination". Travelers wish to visit the island at least once in their lifetime.

According to legend, Santorini emerged from the depths of the sea- opinion justified by the timeless activity of the undersea volcano and the geological topography of the island.

The first human remains, dating back to the Stone Age, show that the island has been inhabited since the prehistoric times. There is some evidence of life in the early Bronze Age, in the mid-3rd millennium BC, during the second period of the early Cycladic civilization (2800-2100 BC). However, from the middle Bronze Age (1900-1600 BC), evidence becomes more abundant, showing great development.

In the area of Akrotiri (Promontory), there was a prehistoric settlement with a very important port. The great volcanic eruption in the late Bronze Age (ca.1600 BC) buried the settlement under 30 metres of ash.

Fira , the capital,is famous for the narrow streets which are filled with many gourmet restaurants, traditional tavernas, shops, art galleries and jewellery shops.

Transportation is served with daily flights from Athens airport with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines, as well as with speed boats and ferries from Heraklion, Mykonos, Santorini and Piraeus port.
