The most important of these is that of the Wood of the True Cross (Lignum Crucis), believed by some Roman Catholics to be the biggest surviving piece of the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. Because of this, the monastery was an important pilgrimage centre, and is one of the important holy sites of Roman Catholicism in Europe, alongside other notable places such as Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Caravaca de la Cruz and Assisi.

.If exploring unusual rock formations then be sure to visit El Soplao cave,"The Sistine Chapel with stalactites".
The quality, whiteness and most of all the abundance of its eccentric or helictite formations are beyond all comparison. There are caves, with this type of concretions inside, but there are none with the abundance and grandeur of those in the Soplao cave.

I have stayed here twice once in February'12 for a month and again in June'12. The owner Maria is fantastic, there is nothing she has not thought about making this apartment home from home and she is on hand to help out with any problems, nothing is too much trouble for her. The weather in February was very cold but the apartment was always warm and cosy you can have the heating on as much or as little as you wish and there was always plenty of hot water. Cooking facilities are excellent and there is plenty of crockery and cutlery. There is a large fridge/freezer and the washing machine is simple to use. An Iron and ironing board is provided as is a hair-dryer. Maria also has a wonderful stock of cleaning products you can use along with toiletries in the bathroom. Bed linen and towels were also plentiful, Maria also provides beach towels and parasol. To get internet access you need to obtain a "dongle" although Maria sorted this out for us after which we did not encounter any problems accessing the internet. The apartment is in a quiet location with less than a 5 minute walk to the supermarket (Lupa) where you can get everything you would need for your stay. It is 3 minutes to the bus stop and 5 minutes to the train station and main bus station and only a short walk to the main square. The apartment is very close to the Ferry terminal and a short distance from the airport, it costs 2€ each way on the bus to the airport or 20€ in a taxi. There are some lovely bars and restaurants in Santander, especially along the harbour. I would definitely return here again and have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone.
