Santander is a beauty city. The majority of the population resides in the coastal area, particularly in two cities: Santander, with 183,000 people, and Torrelavega, the second largest urban and industrial centre in Cantabria, having a population of around 60,000. These two cities form a conurbation known as the Santander-Torrelavega metropolitan area. The people is kind and peaceable. The City is ideal for walking, cycling, shopping, relaxing, and dreaming next to a view of a romantic and spectacular bay. There are wonderful villages in the interior of the region, all green and blue, with few habitants, pleasant to the visitor. It's a good place to get rest, calm, and stop the time on your wristwatch. Ideal to forget, for a time, the routine of life.

The Cantabria province region

It has a dam, mild, Atlantic climate with fairly constant average temperatures.Winter sees between 8º and 12º, while the summer months do not get warmer than 30º.

Cantabria is the richest region in the world for archaeological sites from the Upper Paleolithic period, although the first signs of human occupation date from Lower Paleolithic. The most significant site for cave paintings is that in the cave of Altamira, dating from about 16,000 to 9000 BC and declared, along with nine other Cantabrian caves, as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO According to the 2009 Census, the region has a population of 591,886 which constitutes 1.29% of the population of Spain, with the population density numbering 106.8 people per kilometre. The average life expectancy for male inhabitants is 75 years whilst for female inhabitants it is 83 years.

After the Down of Roman Empire and the fall of the spiritual practices, the first European kingdoms start to adopt the Christianity as their common religion, beginning a process of cultural unifying that will crystallize in the 12th Century with the great medieval movements of peegrinacion, meanwhile the Islamic threat was forced to move down to the south of the Iberia Peninsula. The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is a Roman Catholic monastery located in the district of Liébana, near Potes in Cantabria, Spain. The most important of these is that of the Wood of the True Cross (Lignum Crucis), believed by some Roman Catholics to be the biggest surviving piece of the cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. Because of this, the monastery was an important pilgrimage centre, and is one of the important holy sites of Roman Catholicism in Europe, alongside other notable places such as Rome, Santiago de Compostela, Caravaca de la Cruz and Assisi.

The international United World Colleges (UWC) is building a new school will be its first center in Spain, which opened in September 2013 in Comillas (Cantabria), with an influx of 240 scholarships for international students with 45,000 euros each to study the two year International Baccalaureate.

.If exploring unusual rock formations then be sure to visit El Soplao cave,"The Sistine Chapel with stalactites".

The quality, whiteness and most of all the abundance of its eccentric or helictite formations are beyond all comparison. There are caves, with this type of concretions inside, but there are none with the abundance and grandeur of those in the Soplao cave.

This part of the Cantabrian coast is continual alternation of cliffs, important marshlands and magnificent beaches.

"Fantastic"

I have stayed here twice once in February'12 for a month and again in June'12. The owner Maria is fantastic, there is nothing she has not thought about making this apartment home from home and she is on hand to help out with any problems, nothing is too much trouble for her. The weather in February was very cold but the apartment was always warm and cosy you can have the heating on as much or as little as you wish and there was always plenty of hot water. Cooking facilities are excellent and there is plenty of crockery and cutlery. There is a large fridge/freezer and the washing machine is simple to use. An Iron and ironing board is provided as is a hair-dryer. Maria also has a wonderful stock of cleaning products you can use along with toiletries in the bathroom. Bed linen and towels were also plentiful, Maria also provides beach towels and parasol. To get internet access you need to obtain a "dongle" although Maria sorted this out for us after which we did not encounter any problems accessing the internet. The apartment is in a quiet location with less than a 5 minute walk to the supermarket (Lupa) where you can get everything you would need for your stay. It is 3 minutes to the bus stop and 5 minutes to the train station and main bus station and only a short walk to the main square. The apartment is very close to the Ferry terminal and a short distance from the airport, it costs 2€ each way on the bus to the airport or 20€ in a taxi. There are some lovely bars and restaurants in Santander, especially along the harbour. I would definitely return here again and have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone.
