The Lemon house is perched on the terraced slopes of Arco de Sao Jorge a sleepy village in the north of the island of Madeira. The house nestles in the old vineyards and looks out over wonderful scenery. Situated in Madeira's national park, a world heritage reserve which is the largest surviving area of ancient Laurel forest in the world. An area of ecological importance providing habitats to unique species of flora and fauna. With surrounding views of the sea, ancient forests and mountain slopes, it is a perfect location for those who appreciate peace, tranquility and nature. This is a great location if you are looking for a get away from it all place to escape, relax and unwind. The area has some of the most stunning walks on the island close by with spectacular scenery along mountain paths, through ancient forests, by waterfalls and along coastal cliffs.

The Lemon house is light, airy and spacious, comfortably furnished with high quality natural furnishings and fabrics and is 'eco -friendly.'

We use environmentally friendly household products and supply our guests with our own uniquely beautiful handcrafted natural olive oil soaps. Our surrounding organic garden has many lovely and exotic species of plants including giant tree ferns, birds of paradise flowers, air plants, orchids, jasmine, agapanthus, trumpet trees, and sub- tropical fruit trees including lemons, oranges, bananas, papaya, persimmon, philadendron and passion fruit. The house is accessed by a pathway running through the old vineyard, a wonderful experience in the late summer as the ripening grapes swell on the heavily laden vines ready for the wine making harvest in September.

The Madeira region

Madeira is known as 'the floating garden of the Atlantic;' with it's mild, warm climate. The north of the island is a beautiful location for holidays if you enjoy scenery, walking or just relaxing and getting away from busy tourist destinations.

The climate is usually warm in the spring and summer months, and cooler with more rainfall in late autumn, winter and early spring.

Funchal, the city and port has a charming, relaxed atmosphere with a lovely old town with art projects, cafes, restaurants and bars.

Santana, Madeira

Arco de Sao Jorge is a great place if you want to experience peace and quiet and appreciate natural surroundings.

Local activities include a visit to the museum of wine making and vineyards, rose gardens, and spectacular coastal walking.

Madeira has a rich maritime history and was known for the production of sugar cane and Madeira wines. Wine making is still an important part of it's culture and there are plenty of wine lodges with opportunities to try and buy Madeira wine.

"Be careful. Not good for a winter holiday."

This was a nice house in a pleasant unspoilt village. Good position , very quiet & attractive.with nice garden & terraces. The downside was the standard of cleanliness and lack of drying facilities.Th… More

Please see a previous guest review 'the house is cleaned to a high standard.'
The guests who made the comment that the house needs a deep clean contacted me a week after their holiday and sent me a photo of some hardened glue on a skirting board which they insisted was dirt. They complained that it rained a lot during their stay - I informed them before they booked the house that January can be a rainy and cool month. Most guests who book a holiday in the winter are prepared for this and are realistic about what to expect. The north of Madeira has a higher average rainfall than the south and west of the island, particularly in the winter months. This is the reason it is so beautiful and sustains the largest surviving ancient Laurel forest. Of course a house will feel cold and damp on a rainy night until the heating is switched on. Electric heaters are provided in every room making the wood burner an optional source of heat. A large basket of wood is provided during the cooler months and guests can choose if they want to light the fire. These guests did not read the instructions on how to switch on the electric heating. Clothes driers are provided for drying wet clothes over the radiators.
There is a choice of bedrooms with double and twin beds, the double bed is used regularly by returning guests over 6ft tall without any complaints. The mattresses are new with good quality mattress covers. Electric blankets are provided on the beds during the cooler months.
Clear and detailed written directions to the house are provided and guests usually find the house without any problems.

"Exceptional location and standart, with a few lows on the cleanliness but absolute quieteness, perfect remoteness"

What a contrast between the fantastic welcome, the very high standard of the house, and then... the sloppy cleaning...From the very first contact, Gaynor, the owner, was so nice and helpful, making th… More

The house is cleaned by the housekeepers before/after each guests stay. Guests are politely requested not to leave the house in a dirty or untidy condition, this is not the same as asking them to clean the house for the next guests.
There is no barbecue listed, this guest was told there was no barbecue before he booked the house.
All rooms in the house have electric heating, a basket of wood is supplied free of charge for the wood burner. In a self catering property it is usual for guests to take care of their own expenses.
The beds have mattress covers which reflect the high standard of hygiene provided.

"solitude - rejuvenation and glorious views"

I needed a week away from work. This was a perfect choice.
I found the house home from home. Clutter free, simple and furnished with the flair of an artist. My priority was a peaceful chemical free week. The garden and house were perfect. Spent my time wandering the organic garden, spying on the butterflies and snoozing on the patio admiring the views. Hardly a car went by and the aroma from the bakery across the road had me pottering across to purchase real home made fresh bread.
rejuventing holiday for sure.
