The Marche / Abruzzo / Marche region
Italians call Le Marche “Italy in one region”, as it seems to have it all. Sitting alongside Tuscany and Umbria, the natural beauty Le Marche enjoys ranges from its 125 miles of sandy beaches to the delightful rolling hills of its central region to the wonderful mountains of the Monte Sibillini National Park in the west.
Le Marche is an outstanding holiday destination with its natural beauty, its history, art, and culture and with so much to see and do during your stay. Unlike other areas of Italy, Le Marche makes an ideal all-year-round destination. Summer in Le Marche provides the perfect weather for any type of outdoor living, while spring and autumn are a time of festivals that bring the villages to life and are an excellent time to be exploring. Le Marche is also great for winter breaks, particularly with its mountain ski resorts, which are only 40 minutes from S. Vittoria.
If that wasn’t enough, Le Marche is also one of Italy’s leading regions for the fashion industry, notably the manufacturer of shoes and handbags. As a result, the region is dotted with outlet stores for many of Italy’s most famous brands. A visit to them is a must for anyone who likes a great bargain.
Santa Vittoria in Matenano area
Santa Vittoria in Matenano is centrally located between the Adriatic Sea and the Sibillini Mountain National Park. This makes it ideally positioned for discovering this wonderful corner of Italy, with the magnificent town of Ascoli Piceno only 40 minutes away or the delightful and elegant town of Fermo just 25 minutes. The beautiful beaches of the Adriatic coast are only 30 minutes away, of which Porto San Giorgio or San Benedetto del Tronto are top examples.
The village was founded in 890 by the Monks of Farfa at the foot of Mount Matenano, on the top of which the Farfa Abbey was constructed. Today you can view the remains of the majestic complex with its impressive frescos. In the historic centre, the thirteenth century Oderisio Abbot Tower and beautiful examples of period palazzo, ranging from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, are well worth a visit.
S. Vittoria is typical of the hill-top villages of the area which are a delight to visit; whether discovering their history, or simply enjoying the ambiance of their cafes, bars and restaurants. The views from their belvedere (balconies) are some of the best in Italy.
