Simmons Raffo Villa
£650–£1700 / week
About the home
We bought the villa in April 2003.
The minute we walked through the villa gates, we fell in love with the sense of peace and spaciousness of both the house and the garden and everyone who has visited it so far, has felt the same way.
The villa is situated close to the village of Valverde, an easy, twenty minute drive south by car or taxi from Alicante airport and only 4km from the nearest beach at the small sea side town of Santa Pola.
One of the things that attracted us to this part of Costa Blanca is that visitors to the area are mainly Spanish - more paella than fish and chips and the coast offers miles of sandy beaches. Yet both Elche and Alicante are close enough for an evening in the city.
We now have Wireless Broadband Internet connectivity, FreeSat HD TV (BBC and ITV HD channels), DVD player (and a big pile of DVD's), iPhone or iPod player and loads of music CD's for your pleasure
It is perfectly possible to spend a week in the villa and not feel bored - sunbathing by the large pool, relaxing in the shade under the palm trees in the garden, or, as the sun sets, walking the gravel paths through the orange, lemon and pomegranate groves close by.
We hope that you too will enjoy your stay and feel the benefit of the care and attention we have brought to our villa.

The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
Alicante (Spanish: [aliˈkante]) or Alacant (Valencian: [alaˈkant])[1] is a city in Spain, the capital of the Province of Alicante and of the comarca of Alacantí, in the south of the Valencian Community. It is also a historic Mediterranean port. The population of the city of Alicante proper was 334,418, estimated as of 2010, ranking as the second-largest Valencian city.[2] Including nearby municipalities, Alicante conurbation was populated by 458,843 residents.[3] Population of the metropolitan area (including Elche and satellite towns) was 769,284 as of 2010 estimates, ranking as the eighth-largest metropolitan area of Spain.
The Santa Pola area
Santa Pola lies just twenty kilometres south of Alicante and is very easily reachable either by car on the National highway N-332 or by air when landing at the Altet Airport just 15 kilometres away.
Santa Pola quickly takes you back to Roman times. It was here where the Portus Illicitanus, the Roman ruins, were found. The Roman House of the Palmeral which was built during the Low Imperial and the Roman factory for pickling and salting fish from the 4th century B. C. are also clear signs of this era.
It was a most prosperous fishing village on the Costa Blanca and still lands some of the biggest Spanish fish catches, but today this has been somewhat overtaken by tourism. The harbour offers a wonderful evening visit with fresh fish and an evening drink and stroll along the harbour and sea front.
Santa Pola extends and hugs both side of the Renaissance Castle-Fortress built in the 16th c. to defend itself from the pirate attacks. This building is found in the city centre and has a very strict military appearance.
It houses the magnificent Archaeological Museum where you can feast your eyes and admire Iberian and Roman findings. Along with this, the Fishing Museum with a rich selection of maritime objects and a fascinating aquarium
There is a Safari Park in walking distance to the Villa in Valverde which has a children's park, playing area and a go-kart track.
If you can bear to tear yourselves away from the pool, there are some very nice town beaches in Santa Pola itself at about five kilometres to the East and the beach at Playa Lissa has some great bars and restaurants where you can eat and watch the young guns windsurf and kitesurf. At the far end of Playa Lissa (to the right as you look at the sea) is a place to hire and learn windsurfing and kitesurfing but park before you leave the tarmaced road.
There are really lovely beaches set in pine forests if you go south to La Marina and Guardamar and beyond. Here are the beaches of El Pinet, Les Pesqueres, La Marina and El Rebollo, where clear waters and fine sand provide excellent swimming, which can be combined with pleasant strolls among the pine groves flanking the beach. (As you make your way across the salt water lakes, notice the beautiful pink flamingos to the right.)
Guardamar harbour also does boat trips and has a Sunday market.
The Nature Reserves - The villa is within ten minutes drive of two nature reserves - the salt lake nature reserve and the palm tree reserve. This area offers a marvellous landscape with a very special ecosystem at the lagoon of El Fondo.

Guestbook for Simmons Raffo Villa
This was the first time I had ever been on a villa holiday and it exceeded my expectations. As a mum with a toddler, I did not want a long onward journey from the airport before arriving at the accommodation and this villa was perfect for that. It was only a 20 min drive from Alicante airport which was ideal for us. The villa was relatively easy to find. We had a sat nav, but Michael and Julias directions were spot on. If you havent driven in Spain before, the technique for crossing the carriageway takes a bit of getting used to! I would advise swotting up on the Spanish driving etiquette before you go. I agree with other reviews that you will need a car at this villa as there is nothing that you could walk to safely nearby. As this villa does give you a taste of authentic Spain, be prepared to brush up on your Spanish and/or take a phrase book! The inside of the villa is spacious and comfortable. The decor is rustic with a traditional Spanish feel. The welcome pack on arrival was a really nice touch too. The villa is extremely well equipped and just about everything you could need is there, you might just have to hunt around a little for it! Incase you get a rainy day, the villa is well stocked with books, dvds and board games. The villa is maintained and monitored regularly by the site manager, pool attendant and gardener. The pool was a great size although it does get quite deep quite quickly, so I had to keep quite a close eye on my toddler. The gardens are a real strength of the villa. Massively disproportionate to the inside space, a lot of care and attention has clearly gone into the grounds, providing peace and tranquillity in a beautiful backdro p, just what is needed when you are trying to escape the madding crowd. We fired up the barbecue many times and enjoyed alfresco dining every day, a luxury not afforded often living in the UK! We stayed local and if we went into town, it was into Santa Pola. The beaches tend to get busy quickly during the day (we went in high season), but we went in for a meal one evening and that was fantastic. We ate at the Porto Bella Restaurant overlooking the boats in the marina which was a fantastic backdro p. Restaurants tend to open quite late compared to here, but I was pleasantly surprised how welcome children are. Walking along the seafront of an evening was lovely, the place had a very family-friendly feel. Other reviews have referred to noise. There were a few times where dogs barked and you could hear the animals and loudspeaker in the nearby safari park, but to me it was negligible. The main culprit of noise seemed to be the insects (maybe crickets?!) that lived in the trees! Michael and Julia (the owners of the villa) will get in touch with you before you go with lots of useful information about the villa and the local area. This is really helpful if you arent familiar with the Santa Pola/Elche area. The guest book at the villa itself reveals the many groups of people that have not only enjoyed their stay at the villa but that have returned several times. I am already regretting not booking a two week stay! I would recommend this villa to anyone .

“What a wonderful holiday yet again – this time over Christmas and New Year. Perfect in every way and really not that cold – the best of all on the heating side has to be the log burning fire – magic! The heat from it can be too much. Not wishing to sound too repetitive, but this villa will always hold a place in our hearts – even after America and a ‘modern, luxurious villa’. The answer lies in its location and grounds – you close the driveway gates and it’s a world all of your own. Totally private and safe. We just love this place!!”

“Great food, great location and most of all – great company. Amongst many highlights were the sweetest figs from the garden that we have ever tasted, some fab wine and a great trip to Aqualandia. We’ll definitely be back”

“A week of total bliss! This has been the perfect holiday – between 34 and 38 C all week, sun, a beautiful castle of a villa and the most gorgeous garden! Being a keen gardener myself, I really loved the various plants, trees and flowers – most of them not found in Norway. We all loved the swimming pool, especially our two boys who could stay in the water all day. Thank you ever so much for this perfect holiday – we have loved every minute”

“It’s like coming home – this is our fourth visit. Peace and serenity – pool and sun, food and relaxation. We love it all. Some great things have been added and done since our last visit – the new drive, the new kitchen and the new bathroom. The pool is as welcoming as ever and we rarely left its side. Toasted and mellow, it is with regret and sorrow that we wend our way home today”

“We have had a truly fabulous time doing very little other than enjoying this exclusive bit of paradise for two fantastic weeks. Wonderful place, garden pool and surroundings. Chilled and relaxed with barbecues, bike rides, swimming, Cluedo, chess, figs and grapes, Bob Dylan, Tracey Chapman. Bliss”

“Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful Spanish home – so many lovely aspects – the tranquil, cool, early mornings sitting in the garden, with the honeysuckle arch and oleander in view, the waving palm trees, particularly the distant one like a peacocks tail, the refreshing, warm swims, the constant birdsong, butterflies, sunshine and shadows – it was so special to spend this special time with the dearest ones on earth to us – laughter, discussion, debate and frivolity. Thank you for a very lovely time”
