The Costa Verde region

The Douro is one of the oldest wine regions, created in Portugal in 1756, during the reign of King D. José I. UNESCO classified the region as “Patrimony of the Humanity” on December 14, 2001.
The main towns in the area are Peso da Régua, 15 Km from Solar das Ramadas, and Vila Real just over 20 Km away. Régua, the capital of Port Wine, has several river beaches, fishing areas and offers boat trips crossing several locks on the Douro River - an unforgettable experience, especially at harvest time (September) or in autumn when the colours of the vegetation in the Douro Valley are unique. The city of Porto, the capital of Northern Portugal, is located about 110 km away, and can be reached by boat, train or by road. Pinhão, about 30 Km upstream of Régua, is a small village well worth visiting as it is surrounded by the largest Douro wine producing farms - the famous fine wine known all over the world as Port wine!
Within 80 Km there is an old 18 hole golf course - Vidago - that was totally renovated approximately 1 year ago. The golf course can be accessed by a new motorway, which allows you to make the journey in less than 1 hour.
The Santa Marta de Penaguiao / Fontes area
Fontes is a small village about 8 Km from the county seat of Santa Marta de Penaguião. It is the oldest council of the municipality with a Charter dating back to 1202. Sadly due to emigration it has lost the majority of its population. However, it has everything to cover ones immediate needs - a small supermarket, a nice restaurant (Restaurant Senhora do Viso) and two or three cafes. Fontes lies at the foot of Serra do Marão, the sixth highest mountain in Portugal. In good weather and without snow one can walk up to the chapel of Senhora da Saúde, located at an altitude of over 1,300 metres. Two other chapels, Senhora do Viso, and Santa Quitéria as well as the parish church of Santiago, all in Fontes, are well worth a visit. The Procession of Senhora do Viso takes place every year on the first weekends of August and September.
Fontes holds quite a unique event in Portugal, usually on the last weekend of July, the Xassos Urban Cup, a crazy 2 Km, partly urban and partly rural, old motorcycle race on extremely steep descents! The event normally attracts nearly a hundred participants.
Régua has three or four large supermarkets and several good restaurants (Douro In, Varanda da Régua, and Cacho de Oiro). In Folgosa, about 10 Km away on the EN222 to Pinhão, on the River Douro, there is probably the best restaurant in Portugal, the DOC (a mixture of nouvelle and typical Portuguese cuisine).
