Home description
A two double bedroom, one bathroom first floor (not ground floor) apartment in brand newly-built block. Large living room with kitchen area facing the beach (south) and balconies on two sides (south & west). Walking distance to shops, restaurants, bars etc and several hotels.
From this apartment you can stroll 140 paces to the beach and swim in the beautifully warm and clear sea. You can have a windsurfing/kitesurfing lesson, go deep-sea fishing in a boat from Santa Maria, or hire a 4x4 and explore the island, which is only about 22 km long by 10 km wide. There are some wonderfully deserted, sandy beaches on both the east and west coasts within a few kilometres of the town, and an open-cast salt mine in an extinct volcano where you can lie on the water without sinking!
For the more adventurous, take a flight to any one or more of the other nine islands in the CV archipelago. There is so much variety to experience - 20km deserted beaches on Boa Vista, the volcano which is Fogo, the dramatic verdant mountains in the hinterland of Santiago, the bustling street markets of Praia, the capital city, and the uniquely cosmopolitan atmosphere of Mindelo, on Sao Vicente.

The Sal Island region
Cape Verde is destined to become the leading alternative to the Caribbean as a "winter sun" holiday destination for Europeans, having a year-round tropical climate, and being only a five to six hour flight from the UK, (with no jet-lag!). The islands enjoy average daytime temperatures which only vary from 24 to 28 degrees centrigrade winter to summer, and with sea temperatures to match.
Uninhabited when discovered b Portuguese explorers in 1460, the islands remained a Portuguese colony until 1975. Cape Verde is now a democratic republic with a legal and political system along European lines. The diverse population inlcudes Creoles, Africans, Portuguese and many other nationalities, since for centuries the islands were a vital refuelling station for ships from all parts of the world. Cultural identity is important to the Cape Verdeans with their own distinct style of music. There is an incredible choice of fish and seafood as well as local dishes made from a wide choice of home grown fruit (coconut, mango, papaya, dates and sugar cane) and vegetables (maize, beans, cassava and sweet potato). The local rum is called "grogue" and is thought ot be the origin of the word "groggy"!
Santa Maria area
Santa Maria (Portuguese for Saint Mary) is the small fishing town situated in the southern part of the island municipality of Sal, Cape Verde with hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops within its main streets.
Visitors to the islands will find a wide choice of actitivies open to them to suit all ages. Sal is renowned throughout the world as a windsurfing and kite surfing centre, thanks to its year-round ambient air and water temperatures. Conditions are also ideal for scuba diving, shark and deep sea fishing.
