Home description
Casa a Lago, a farmers house built in 1858, was reconverted into a delightful country style cottage surrounded by a lawned garden; all around, chestnut and other mature trees mix with oleanders, hydrangeas, palm trees. A stream runs nearby and forms a small waterfall, whose gentle sound contributes to the relaxing atmosphere of the place. According to the owner, it releases a healthy ion exchange, which has a very positive effect on body and soul! People with respiratory problems will find great benefit. The most endearing feature of the house is the lawned front garden, shaded by fruit trees and with outdoor games available for the younger guests. The cottage has retained its rustic features, such as the original Lombard terracotta tiles, the stone internal staircase and timber ceilings in all rooms. The windows are also original and feature attractive red shutters.

The Lombardy / Lake Como Area
Casa a Lago is named so as it is situated near and above Lake Como in the picturesque village of Cremia, on the sunny west side of Lake Como. Cremia is an old hamlet of Roman origins built on the hill above the Lake shore and is a typical Alpine village; from there, a walking track called Via Antica Regina, leads to the village of Santa Maria Rezzonico and further down the lake.
At only 8 km from Menaggio and 30 km north of Como, Cremia is well situated for day trips by car or by ferry across to the opposite shore to the other small lakeside towns. The west shore has a particularly mild climate and one of the prettiest promenades of the entire lake.
Santa Maria Rezzonico area
A drive down the lake (or boat ride) brings you to the town of Como, known as a vacation spot of the elite and also known for its production of fine silk. Day trips can be made by bus or car to the nearby Bellagio (15 km by ferry), Tremezzo (20 km), Como (30 Kms) Lugano, Switzerland (30 km) and to hiking in the Alps and by steamer on Como. In the village you can find two restaurants, an alimentari (grocery store), and walks along the mountains. Boat rentals, sailing and wind surfing equipment are available in San Vito. There are also many fine and beautiful golf courses in the lake area; the closest golf and tennis are in Menaggio. Shoppers will also love the designer fashion factory outlets available just over the border into Switzerland and near Como.

Guestbook
Just coming back down to earth after our wonderful trip to Italy, and I wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed Casa a Lago. It's amazing what you can do with an old farmhouse, and it was done to perfection - just the right blend of rustic and convenient. Add an oven and a larger fridge, and I could have stayed all summer! The location was idyllic (though rather further from Sta. Maria Rezzonico - and the lake - than I had imagined), the garden and back courtyard charming< and I loved walking along the terrace, calling out "Buon giorno" to the neighbors on our way to and fro!
