The Campania region
Campania region is the beginning of the 'mezzogiorno'. Translating as the 'midday' the phrase evokes the sunbaked south. And Campania - with its ancient Greek and Roman towns, rumbling volcanoes and glittering blue coastline, at times evokes Classical Greece as much as modern Italy. You could be a million miles from bureaucratic and businesslike Milan.
Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the centre of Western Civilisation's most significant entities. The area was colonised by Ancient Greeks and was within Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman era the area was highly respected as a place of culture by the emperors, where it balanced Greco-Roman culture. The area had many duchies and principalities during the Middle Ages, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and some Lombards.
It was under the Normans that the smaller indepedent states were brought together as part of a sizable European kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Sicily, before the mainland broke away to form the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that especially elements of Spanish, French and Aragonese culture touched Campania. Later the area became the central part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, until the Italian unification of 1860 when it became part of the new state Italy.
The capital city of Campania is Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The name of Campania itself is derived from Latin, as the Romans knew the region as Campania felix, which translates into English as "fortunate countryside". The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important in the tourism industry, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Cilento Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.
Santa Maria di Castellabate area
The villa overlooks the bay of Santa Maria di Castellabate, which is a protected marine park. The sea is clean and transparent, the beaches made of fine golden sand: a true paradise for adults and children. All along the coastline of the bay you will find long stretches of beach. You will be able to enter the public beach free of charge, or use one of the many beach facilities that in the summer time rent umbrellas and sun lounges and have a cafe and a restaurant. You will also be able to rent boats and practice water sports.
The closest beach from Villa Virginia is at approximately 2 km (1.2 miles).

Guestbook for Villa Virginia
Gary H., Dublin, Ireland - This is a fantastic Villa for a family holiday - every possible facility is provided. The view from the Villa is breathtaking, not surprising as the drive up to find it is incredibly steep! The grounds are wonderful with a stunning pool, outdoor hot showers, outdoor dining area, BBQ, pizza oven, table tennis and plenty more... It is ideal for children as the grounds are fully self-contained with electric gates providing security. The villa itself has 7 equally lovely bedrooms, all en suite, allowing privacy even when with a large group. We had 14 people staying and never felt under each other's feet as the living area is so large. Wireless Internet is a fantastic feature if you want to keep in contact with the real world - very handy if you have a Laptop. I could write for hours recommending Villa Virginia but suffice to say every single minute detail is considered and provided for... Towels for the pool, cleaning, refuse collection - everything is made easy. It is hotel standard luxury with the added bonus of your own privacy and flexibility, not many hotels will let you swim in the pool at 2 in the morning !! In short, Villa Virginia will exceed your greatest expectations... Enjoy your holiday!
Allen M., Wilmington, DE, United States - Our week at Villa Virginia was the best time of our three week vacation in Italy. We had 11 people, some older, some younger, and two children. It worked well for everyone, and there was easily space for more. The view was fantastic, the villa was clean, beautiful and up to date. Annalisa was a great caretaker, and the only surprises were good ones. Overall, we got much more than we really expected.
