The Municipality of Castellabate lies entirely within the borders of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano instituted in 1991, it is second biggest Italian park.

Legends like the Myth of Palinuro and the Helmsman of Aeneas (Enea), and the story of Ulysses, the hero nearly bewitched by the Leucosian Mermaid, all originate from the magical Cilentan landscape.
