The Algarve region
Tavira is situated in the Eastern Algarve about 30 minutes from Faro Airport and 20 minutes from the border with Spain. The region is not highly developed in comparison with the Western Algarve, yet has superb beaches and amongst the newest and largest golf courses in the Algarve. Though Tavira is the most significant and historic town, neighbouring towns such as Olhao and Vila Real are full of character and offer interesting opportunities for shopping for local crafts. The Ria Formosa, stretching from Faro to Tavira is the most extensive lagoon complex in Portugal and offers a range of trails and footpaths, beaches, islands and natural habitats to be explored.
Santa Maria, Tavira
Ilha da Tavira is the nearest beach. Accessed by ferry or water taxi, this beach is 5km long, with beautiful golden sand, with lifeguards. Sun beds and parasols are available to hire in the summer and there is a good choice of bars and restaurants; many include sea food on their menus.
Barrill Beach at Pedras del Rei, on the far side of Santa Luzia to the west is a superb beach served by a small complex of cafes, restaurants, shops and restaurants set in the quaint buildings of a former fishing community. There is a stunning spectacle of old ships anchors alongside the beach. The beach has lifeguards and sun beds and umbrellas for hire. It can be reached by a mini train service or on foot from the parking area at Pedras del Rei.
Cabanas beach is the nearest beach to the east and can be reached by water taxi or by ferry from Cabanas waterfront. Further east, Manta Rota, about 15-20 minutes by car or bus is a fabulous alternative.
Out and About in Tavira
Walk to the end of Rua Poeta Emiliano da Costa and turn to the left and within seconds you are on the riverside. Walk across the bridge in front of you and you are in the market square where there are frequently live entertainment, market stalls, an ice cream kiosk and where tables and chairs sprawl out by the river.
The Old Market Place is a beautiful structure, with bars and restaurants on the perimeter by the river and market square, craft shops and a newsagent selling daily papers from the UK and most major European countries. There is a large seating area inside offering free WiFi.
A little further out along the river you will pass the colourfully painted fishing boats and across the road a selection of fish restaurants then reach the access point for the ferry, water taxi and river and coastal tours.
Running parallel to this is the main street, Rua Primeiro de Maio, where a variety of shops, banks and less expensive eating places can be found. Continuing to the end of this street past the Via Gale hotel brings you to Tavira's food market, open most days of the week, where a large variety of fish, meat and vegetables can be purchased at amazing prices.
Walking in the opposite direction from the market square brings you past the riverside gardens to the main town square, the Praca da Republica. This and the street leading from here towards the station have recently been pedestrianised. There are a variety of interesting shops, patisseries, cafes and restaurants located here. Part of this area is set out in the form of an amphitheatre, where in the summer, there are live performances almost every night.
This area sits alongside the Roman Bridge beyond which there are some pleasant riverside walks either side of the river.
Crossing back along the river at this point takes you into old fashioned alleyways with more shops and some of the best restaurants in the town. Walking back down the river takes you past a lovely riverside bar and a French delicatessen and wine cellar both ideal for catching the late afternoon sun.
There is a wide choice of restaurants throughout Tavira catering for traditional Portuguese and wider European and other ethnic tastes. Many of these are situated charming situations in the narrow streets and alleyways on the east side of the river along from the Roman Bridge. There are also groups of restaurants around the old market place and in the Praca da Republica and a group row of fish restaurants facing the river just beyond the old market place close to the fishing port. Out of town, there are countless restaurants on the Ilha da Tavira and some good eating places in the neighbouring town of Santa Luzia to the west.

There are a variety of local attractions to visit including:
•Tavira skate park on the east bank just past the railway viaduct.
•The Camera Obscura offering a 360 degree view of Tavira from up high
•Tavira's 2000 year old castle, located up the hill past the tourist office, which has gardens and great views across the roof tops from on top of its walls.
•A number of magnificent historic churches.
•The Municipal Museum in Palacio de Galeria.
•The Tuna Museum at the Vila Gale Albacora complex on the east side of the river going out towards the sea.
There is a useful small grocery store 50 metres up the street as you turn right out of the front door. It has a small wood entrance door and a BP sign.
The nearest supermarket to the house is the Pingo Doce at the end of Rua Joaquim Jara which runs to the rear of the property. There is also a Mini Preco in Rua Primeiro de Maio across the river and an Aldi store by the station.
At Tavira's food market, open most days of the week, a large variety of fish, meat and vegetables can be purchased at amazing prices.
There are a range of craft and speciality shops in the town particularly around the old market place and on the way up towards the station.
The recently opened Grand Plaza on the east side of the town is a major new shopping mall with over 100 shop units, including a Continente hypermarket, cinema complex and food court.
Other major shopping centres in the Algarve include the Forum in Faro, and the commercial centre in Albufeira.
Tavira has five of the most up to date golf courses in Portugal within 30 minutes. Of these, three are located around the adjacent town of Conceicao about 15 minutes from Tavira.

"Central location. High quality apartment"
Apartment is in the centre of Tavira. Easy walk to the bars and restaurants. Nearby shop is two streets away. You will find there everything. Apartment is very high spec. Beautifully decorated. Very modern but cosy. Tiles everywhere are gorgeous. I loved the bathrooms -both equipped with Hanz Grohe showers-my favourite brand. You may find area a bit loud, but remember it is a central Tavira. Usually more loud during the day time. Never had disturbed sleep at night. When you're in Tavira make sure you visit Ilha de Tavira. Beautiful beach on the island. There is a boat which goes every hour. Re apartment, if you need to contact the owner just send him an email. He responds very quickly. We definitely enjoyed our stay in Tavira.
