The Ilha do Sal region
Sal (Portuguese for “salt”) belongs to the northern group of islands, called Barlavento. The island is 35 km long by 12 km wide. It is one of the three sandy eastern islands (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) of the archipelago. It's dotted with colourful, cobbled towns, like Santa Maria on the southern shores, where you'll find surf shops, traditional restaurants and a pretty square lined with al fresco cafés. The main attraction, though, is the beach, that stretches along the coast for 8 kilometers. It is over 200m wide in places in a semi circle of white sand and azure waters. At one end is Santa Maria the other end sweeps out into the sea round a peninsular of protected land where turtles lay their eggs.
The island is flat and desert like and there is almost no rain making it very arid. The little rain that does fall is limited to brief heavy showers. Instead of the classic four seasons, the Cape Verde Islands only have two: The Tempo das Brisas (time of the winds) from October to mid-July and the Tempo das chuvas (rainy season) from August to September. The sun shines 350 days a year andthe daytime temperatures range between 21°C and 34°C. The sea in summer season stays in the mid to high 20s. In winter the minimum is 23°C, more than warm enough for swimming. With its many kilometers of beaches and its endless list of water sports, Santa Maria probably offers the most ideal conditions for a classic 'beach' holiday...
It is the most developed of all the Islands in terms of tourism. You'll find everything from trendy surf shops to colourful cafés and restaurants, banks, a health centre, post office, Internet cafés and all types of stores. Eating out is inexpensive. There is a fantastic array of sea food that ranges from 600cve approx €5 (grilled fish) to 1500cve approx €13 for prawns or special dishes. Whilst there, try the local Cape Verdean cuisine of cachupa (stew) or buzio (shel fish). On the pier you will find locals selling fresh fish. The selection varies depending on the season and often contains groupers, tuna, sera and even barracuda and swordfish. You may like also like to try the appraised local wine produced on the volcanic island of Fogo.
There are waters-ports galore, such as surfing, jet skiing, windsurfing, diving, whale watching, kite surfing, sailing, swimming, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing. There are several wrecks around the island and many reefs and caves to explore. If you would like to learn some of these amazing things there are plenty of places to hire equipment, have lessons and organize trips. Trade winds usually blow from November to May and the island becomes a magnet for surfers and kite surfers. From May to November, there is less wind, the water is usually clear, and perfect for diving. Large waves can form at any time depending on the swell. This varies from day to day so there is always a good mix of activities in the average stay.
Live music plays a huge part in Cape Verdean culture and is often performed live in various bars in Santa Maria in the evening. During a stay there the subtle rhythms and the delicate melodies of the mornas and the driving waves of the Funana seep into you. You'll hear it all over the islands, out of car windows, on the radio and in the clubs and bars in the towns. Eventually you get hooked to it and find yourself swaying, wiggling and wanting more. This is a unique experience and one not to be missed. Two festivals that take place on Sal are Nossa Sra. De Piedade(Our Lady of Pity) 15th August and Santa Maria Festival/Municipality Day 11th & 12th September.
Marine life around the coast of Sal is high with countless species including tropical fish, dolphins and turtles. The deep Cape Verde waters offer volcanic lava falling sheer cliffs revealing caves and cracks full of tropical fish. At Burracona in the North, there are caves at 22m, with two entrances. This natural grotto is made out of black basalt so the lighting effects are fantastic. From May to November, due to the lack of wind the water is very clear with visibility is up to 40m. Divers can see a good range of fish, including tropical species such as parrot fish and angelfish, groupers, barracudas, moray eels and, with luck, manta rays, sharks (including the nurse, tiger and lemon) and marine turtles.
Sal is a place of dramatic contrasts, from its sapphire-blue seas and porcelain-white sands to its honey-coloured lunar landscape. As soon as you set eyes on it, you can't help but be captivated by its mismatched charm. Dive head first into waters-ports galore, or simply sink into the 8km of duvet-soft sands that dissolve into the translucent waters...
How to get there:
Cape Verde has four international airports with over 40 flights a week to the islands of Sal, Boa Vista, Sao Vicente and Praia. You can fly to any of them and still use the local flights to connect however it's better to go direct to Sal if that is your final destination (unless you want to go island hopping). All the airlines below go to Cape Verde. Many go directly from most parts of Europe and the UK with a flight time of less than six hours. If you need help with your international flights please contact us with your preferred city of departure and we will advise the best route. A visa is required, this can be bought on arrival for €25.
