The Barlavento Islands region
Situated half way between Portugal and Brazil, the Cape Verde Islands are approximately 700 Kilometres from the Canary Islands and 800 Kilometres from Senegal. Formerly a Porteguse colony, the islands gained independence in 1975. In recent years the islands are becoming popular as a tourist destination due to the reliable sunshine, where temperatures are on average 10 degrees warmer than the Canary Islands in winter.
The island of Sal features glorious white sandy beaches surrounded by clear turquoise-blue ocean. The sun shines 350 days a year and temperatures range between 21°C and 30°C. The gentle breeze blows constantly from the ocean at a relatively low average humidity of 40% to 60%. Sal is popular with surfers, kite surfers, wind surfers and other water sport enthusiasts. On Sal, there are facilities for renting high quality equipment and taking lessons. Diving is a popular activity, thanks to the clear waters and fascinating underwater world of massive rock formations and shipwrecks. Again, quality dive schools are available, suitable for beginners through to experienced divers. Fishing is also very popular. For the less ambitious, the beaches are warm and inviting: perfect for a lazy swim and sunbathing with a good book.
Santa Maria, Sal Island
Close by is the quaint town of Santa Maria with its pretty pastel painted houses and cobblestone streets. The town is rich in culture and comes alive at night, where there are restaurants, pavement cafes bars and nightlife to suit every taste and budget. Fresh local seafood is a must.
The Paradise Beach resort is right on the beach and features beautiful landscaped gardens, lush green areas and a very spacious layout. Accommodation is of an extremely high standard and this striking development ranks amongst the best in Cape Verde.
