The Barlavento Islands region
The Island of Sal is the main tourist destination accounting for over 50% of all travellers to Cape Verde. They are drawn to the beautiful all year round climate, fantastic beaches and world-class water sports. Sal is certainly the most developed of all the Cape Verdean Islands from the point of view of tourism and caters for all budgets from 5* resort style hotels to small bed & breakfast and residential apartments. Sal is the gateway to the other Islands and therefore acts as an ideal base. Santa Maria which has just now been declared as a city, is situated to the south approximately 20 minutes drive from the airport.
The spectacular chalk white sandy beach is the glittering centrepiece to Santa Maria, the main tourist centre on Sal, and the clear turquoise waters are the main draw. Resort style hotels line the main bay, a haven for water sport enthusiasts. The beauty of the beach is its proximity to the main town, and most amenities and attractions are within a short walk from the beach. Forget big and bustling holiday destinations although this is the main tourist centre it is by no means over crowded and remains unspoilt.
The beach acts like a municipal park, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, where people exercise. See locals perform various acrobatics and also practise Copercia, a spectacular Brazilian martial art.
Santa Maria, Sal Island
Santa Maria is a traditional Cape Verdian town with cobbled streets and brightly coloured houses, just a 20 minute walk away from Paradise Beach. Amenities include two banks, a supermarket, and a delightful mixed bag of shops, from surf places selling beach gear to rustic makeshift shops painted in every rainbow colour selling carved wooden masks and brightly coloured canvas by local artists.
The town has an excellent choice in dining, from restaurants serving traditional dishes, to tapas bars, pizzerias, and Italian eateries. Cape Verdian cuisine will have your taste buds tingling with its exotic mixture of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian cuisine, and if you are a fan of seafood you are in for a real treat; not only is it mouth wateringly delicious – it's extremely reasonably priced too. Tuck into charcoal grilled lobster, juicy giant prawns, tasty octopus, and of course, the fresh fish catches of the day.
Nightlife generally stems from live music, a mixture of African, Brazilian and Cape Verdian. Santa Maria is one of the liveliest towns with a vibrant buzz of music and local dancers. Whatever you do, don’t leave without experiencing what has been dubbed the most beautiful music on earth – a scintillating hip-swinging fusion of samba and salsa sprinkled with tribal African.

"Prefer to be independant? Then this could be perfect for you."
This was our first trip to Cape Verde, and as most of the offers from the High St pushed the All Inclusive Deals we were wondering if we'd bother to go. I'm so glad that we found this alternate way of enjoying Sal. With few rentals so far in the property's life everything was spot on, sitting on a partially completed complex it's quiet and perfect for relaxing. The on going works are well away from the villa and the background noise is often cancelled by the sound of the sea as it rols onto the beach so is not a problem. Its own pool is great to cool off in and if you want to swin a little the complex pool if frequently empty and so nearly private as well! Sophistication isn't a word you'd use for Santa Maria and for us that was 100% fine, as the locals say "No Stress" the basis of a great holiday. We found the food to be of good standard in relaxed surroundings. For a treat we'd recommend the Upstairs area of the Morabezza (spiral staircase). Sal for us was all about the weather, having a base that's like home and somewhere thats a 30min walk away for eating / drinking and people watching at night. (or a 5 min Taxi ride).

"Beautiful South facing villa, perfect for sunset cocktails..."
We stayed in this villa during the Xmas and New Year period 2012/13. From the moment we stepped inside we knew we had made the right decision in booking.
True to the photos the villa looks like a show home, the standard of furnishing is excellent and the gardens and pool outside are extremely well maintained. Travelling with two daughters, not only did they have their own bedroom each but bathroom too!
Mornings were spent having breakfast on the terrace and playing in the pool. Afternoons we either went across to the sister resort of Tortuga Beach next door where you are free to use the facilities or into town for a lazy lunch in one of the many delicious beach front restaurants - grilled Wahoo a must!
Tortuga itself has a great beach bar/restaurant which was extremely popular for both lunch and dinner, entertainment was also of a good standard although it was always nice to come back to the tranquility of our own place next door. We were surprised more people hadn't discovered the option!
At time of staying on Dunas, the resort wasn't fully operational - due to open Dec 2013, but don't let that put you off, all building work is far higher up and screened off - the villas even have a different gate to come through. Personally we liked having the place to ourselves...!
In summary, if you are looking to get away for some almost guaranteed sunshine in a beautiful villa with equal options to stay in or go out and explore then this is for you. There is a supermarket over the road which is fine for holiday needs or you could eat in a different restaurant every night in town as we did.
Already looking for next year!

A beautiful luxury villa for a fair price. Everything is clean and available; a nice kitchen, tv, a yard with a swimming pool and sunbeds, three bath rooms, airco etcetera.
An excellent place to stay on a nice quiet resort. Cape Verde/Sal is great to surf or simply enjoy the beautiful weather. It can be hard to find a nice restaurant on Sal, but you should definitely go to Le Prive. The best restaurant on the island by far.
