The Ilha do Sal region

Cape Verde is less than 5 1/2 hours from the UK with no time difference - so you won't suffer from any jet lag! Tortuga Resort is just 10 minutes by taxi (15-20 Euros) from Sal airport, the expense of hiring a car is not necessary.

More About Sal...

Sal is the most developed of all the Cape Verde Islands in terms of tourism yet still has a very barren landscape. In the north of the island you will find a salt lake in an extinct volcano crater, an impressive sight. Marine life around the coast of Sal and the rest of the archipelago is high with countless species including flamboyant tropical fish, dolphins and turtles.

Live music plays a huge part in Cape Verdean culture and is often performed live in various bars in Santa Maria during the evening. This is a unique experience and one not to be missed.

A large percentage of visitors come to Sal for the watersports and it's hardly surprising. Sal's long sandy beaches and turquoise water make a wonderful playground for watersports enthusiasts. It is also the perfect place for relaxing in the sun and enjoying long walks along the coastline. Sal is considered to be amongst the world's top five windsurfing locations so it is not uncommon to see bright coloured sails dotted about the ocean. Kite surfing, diving and deep-sea fishing are also very big on Sal. There are plenty of places to hire equipment, have lessons and organise trips.

Santa Maria

The apartment is situated within minutes from the magnificent Ponta Preta beach which is a haven for sun lovers with its crystal clear waters and tropical beaches. Just enjoy the wonderful views and sound of the breaking waves or simply watch the local wind surfers and kite surfers showing off their skills.

Simply watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch on the pier in Santa Maria, stroll around the many craft shops where you can buy anything from African hand made jewellery to beautiful hand paintings or just enjoy a cold beer just watching the day go by.

The town of Santa Maria is a pleasant 20 minute walk away or a short taxi trip where you will be captivated by the blend of African, Brazilian and Portuguese cultures in this charming small cobbled street town which has local shops and bars. There are also numerous restaurants specializing in Cape Verdian cuisine, Italian, grill and fish dishes.

If you are feeling more energetic, you can enjoy surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing, scuba diving and snorkelling all of which have local tuition. Other activities include deep sea fishing, sailing and quad biking. If you want to spend a few hours away from the beach or pool, you can visit the salt lakes at Pedra De Lume or pay a visit to the main town of Espargos.

We spent a month in this luxurious apartment throughout November 2012.We first went to Sal in 2005 and have returned several times since and stayed in different places on the island. We have also visited 4 other Cape Verde islands .Without doubt this Apartment and Resort is easily the best place in Cape Verde that we have stayed at .Self catering in the well equipped kitchen is fun to do.The now surprisingly large range of Imported different products in the shops and supermarkets at very reasonable cost was great. The fish and imported meats and cheeses (particularly via Italian suppliers) are to die for and wont break the bank.Wine and beer is plentiful and cheap.Alternate self catering with lunches and evenings out in Santa Maria (4 euro taxi ride away) and you have the best of all worlds. The restaurants are plentiful ,hygenic(no tummy upsets whatsoever during the whole month ) and suit every budget. We never had a bad meal and enjoyed several meals that were memorable.Good live European singers are also starting to appear in the bars in town. The weather , the never ending white sandy beaches and the Tortuga Resort facilities were great and the Apartment itself is 5 star in size ,comfort and quality - far far better I believe, than anywhere else on Sal at the moment. The owners are very friendly and helpful to deal with and we throughly recommend this Apartment to everyone reading this review and thinking about going to stay on Sal.

"Wonderful relaxing Self Catering Holiday"

Large beautiful well equipped apartment, perfectly situated for the afternoon sun & pleasant evenings on the comfortable patio. The resort is very good for people with mobility problems if they can cope with cobblestones, our Daughter uses a wheelchair and she managed very well around the resort with our help, she also managed well in the apartment, she uses a small collapsible wheelchair and manoeuvred well through the standard sized doorways with care. The staff at the Resort were very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble for them, all the staff we dealt with were excellent. We used the local Taxis and Hotel Shuttle all were prompt, very helpful and again extremely pleasant. Santa Maria is a town with a difference, we followed the Apartment owners recommendations where to go and where to eat and we were not disappointed. Wheelchair users may find the Town difficult to manage but again the locals are very helpful, the sea front is lovely as are all the beaches we saw. The weather was lovely and hot with a constant cooling breeze which we found lovely during the day, I would suggest a jacket for the evenings. We thoroughly recommend this Apartment and Resort and we look forward to returning sometime in the future. My only recommendation/suggestion to the Resort would be to replace the cobbles with flat pathways for people who may have walking difficulties and therefore would manage easier & the Resort would truly be disabled friendly.

"Lovely week in the sun"

The appartment was very nice indeed and suited us perfectly. We had a very good experience of the hotel facilities and staff. Everyone was very friendly and particularly good with our young children. We found the staff to be very attentive. We were self catering and with the fresh fish available from the quay in Santa Maria and the new supermarket 5 mins walk away, we only upgraded to all-inclusive for one day. We would have preferred the pools to be warmer but, other than that, we cant think of a criticism. For a week of sun that is not too far away, there is nowhere to rival this.

"Wonderful week"

We were looking to fly somewhere different this year, to a developing resort as yet relatively untouched by the major changes that tourism brings. We decided to go flight only and book our own accomodation. So what did we find:- Accomodation. This was excellent, sited near the swim up bar/pool and within easy reach of the second pool, hotel and beach. Shrubs formed a natural battier between apartment and pool and afforded a degree of privacy on your balcony. Air conditioning kept you comfortable even in the hottest times and everything you needed for either a fully inclusive or self catering holiday was to hand. For those of you who like to keep a check on what’s happening at home or the ‘footy’ there were a few of the 32 channels available on the two tv’s dedicated to keeping you right up to date. We went self catering and using the daily complementary bus provided by the hotel we soon identified the places in Santa Maria to shop and eat (information supplied by the owners was excellent for this). Visiting Santa Maria was an experience in itself and was a stark contrast to the developed area of the hotel. There are lots of wonderful places to eat and everyone was friendly and helpful. Overall:- High quality accomodation affording easy access to an island where infrastructure is still developing - get in while you can and enjoy!

"Perfect honeymoon destination"

Tortuga's staff was friendly and professional. The apartments are beautiful, equipped, and comfortable. This apartment's location is perfect: right next to the resort's largest pool, and perhaps a 5 minute walk to the beach. Tortuga's grounds are immaculately kept. The beaches are beautiful. The *only* fault I can find with Tortuga is the constant shortage of towels at the pool, but I mention that to show you how hard you have to look to find a fault with the place. People are unusually friendly across the whole island of Sal--- the social 'atmosphere' is just as relaxing and beautiful as the beaches and sunsets. Highly recommended. Taxi service to other cities on the island is simple, always available, and at fixed prices. Sal/Tortuga is a relaxing place to be.
