The Barlavento Islands region
Basking in the sun in the Atlantic ocean, approximately 450km off of the western tip of Senegal in Africa, lays a small cluster of beautiful islands known as the Cape Verde Islands. Having gained it’s independence from Portugal over 30 years ago, Cape Verde is now a republic and is known as the African Caribbean because of it’s tropical climate of continuous sunshine throughout the Year.
The island of Sal is only 30 km in length and 12 km in width and is one of the most arid islands with a lunar landscape, brown rocky plains and deserts made of sand. Located in the extreme South point of the island is Santa Maria with a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shops and where tourism is most developed, with the capital of the island, Espargos, lying to the North
Santa Maria, Sal Island
With endless days of clear blue skies, hours of warming tropical sunshine, crystal clear waters lapping along vast beautiful white sandy beaches makes this an excellent all year round location for water sport fanatics and sun seeking worshippers, with a wide range of activities to choose from.
If you are partial to soft desolate golden sand beaches, fine weather, spectacular scenery and a sense of adventure then the island of Sal will certainly not disappoint
Within walking distance of the quaint fishing town of Santa Maria where a hive of activity throughout the day where locals sell their hand crafted wares and fresh fish is landed daily at the jetty, which may be enjoyed at a vast array of restaurants and bars alongside live guitarists strumming Cape Verdean classics. Santa Maria, Portuguese for Saint Mary, was a former salt working village and is now the tourism center of the Island
All towns and villages around the Cape Verde islands have their own character and welcoming charm. Sal is probably the oldest of all the Cape Verdean islands, owing its existence to a volcanic eruption some 50 million years ago. Traditionally, the population of Sal have relied on salt collection and fishing; however, more recently, tourism and property have taken over as the main industries with Santa Marie being the main attraction with 8 kilometres of stunning beaches

"True holiday pleasure!"
This is our 3rd stay in this property, and just like the times before, we had a great holiday. The apartment is centrally positioned on the resort- so handy for all the amenities and the beach. We took advantage of the hospitality package, available at the resort, which gave us an all inclusive type arrangement. Our daughters age 13. & 15 enjoyed it too, though activities on the island are a bit limited if you have an adventurous nature.

"Fab Resort Hotel for an absolute pampering chillax holiday"
This Resort Hotel is a great place to recharge your batteries. We recommend the `all inclusive` option. First time we have ever done all inclusive and it was a nice surprise. Massive choice of food which varied every day, 4 different restaurants. The only downside was that 3 of the restaurants had to be prebooked for an evening meal and aside from not always being able to get in you also had to choose your menu in advance which how do you know what you want to eat in 3 days time for your evening meal?? We found the service in the evenings at the prebooked restaurants was tremendously slow which when you have a child who is tired out with all the pool activities and wants to just eat and go to bed it`s not recommended but you could do the other buffet style restaurant which was very quick. The staff are excellent, very accommodating, great fun and great at organising activities if you want to get off the sunbed to burn off the calories. Bar service excellent. Maid service great. Could not fault the place. The apartment we stayed in was gr8. It was missing towels on our arrival but on asking staff we ended up with about 20 towels!!! We needed an internet cable which the hotel provided. Always felt if there was a problem getting it sorted would not be an issue however we had no problems. This is definitely a place we quite probably will return to as great for winter sun and to just relax. Thanks to our apartment owners Judith and Andre

"Fabulous holiday in Cape Verde at The Melia Tortuga Hotel."
We stayed for one week in a two-bedroom private rental apartment at the Melia Tortuga Hotel, conveniently located next to the main pool and surrounded by beautiful gardens.
The apartment was beautifully decorated to a very high standard, and the fully equipped kitchen suited the two of us perfectly since we were not taking part of the all-inclusive deal, and could therefore cater for our own breakfast and snacks to enjoy on the lovely terrace outside. The apartment was kept cool by efficient air-conditioning, much needed in the sunny and very hot weather!
The grounds are really clean and tidy with beautiful plants and flowers throughout the whole resort.
Sal as an island is quite undeveloped, and you'll notice new developments are popping up everywhere in the central parts of the island. You cannot help wondering what it will look like in 10-20 years time!
We really enjoyed going in to Santa Maria for our evening meal and a couple of drinks, and to soak up the genuine atmosphere and mix with the friendly locals in town, we found that rather nice since it's quite often difficult to get the real feel for a place because of it all being aimed at tourists and that is not the case here.
Santa Maria town is easily accessible by taxi, always at the ready by Hotel reception and costs only 4 Euros. There are quite a few good restaurants and bars to visit.
Lots of fresh fish and seafood on offer on the menus, but we also had some beautifully cooked meat dishes.
We would certainly recommend a trip to Cape Verde staying at the Melia Tortuga. If you're looking for a nice, relaxing holiday with loads of sunshine and a bit of a difference, this might be the thing for you!

"Luxury apartment in a brilliant complex on a beautiful island"
I have just got back from an amazing holiday.
The apartment has everything you will ever need and more in it , with all the luxury finishes you could hope for.
The apartment offers great value for money with bars and restaurants on site the great thing about this particular appartment is the great pool side locations. Judith had recommended some great restaurants for us there were also great supermarkets close by.
Fab holiday and will be booking to go again next year .

"If you want sunshine then the islands are great - if you are expecting more you may well be disappointed!"
We have mixed feelings about our recent trip to Sal. The beaches are to die for and the weather is just great, but once outside of the resort it is very primitive and as self catering guests we found it extremely difficult to find any variety of foodstuffs, especially fruit & veg, I would therefore carefully consider this as a holiday venue for families, unless of course you are happy to go all inclusive....which actually given the cost of the rental apartment & flights we may as well done. Also as a self catering guest you go without room cleaning and sheet change which given the heat and the fact that you cook indoors make it feel unclean and this sticks in the throat when all other guests have a daily clean.......and we paid att least the same if not more. I think overall that owners need to be more explicit with all these details before booking, especially the information about supermarkets! We stayed at the Tortuga beach resort which was lovely overall, but as non all inclusive guests we were often overlooked and the costs of food & drink are very expensive, which with the lack of food available elsewhere
means you have little choice. There was one member of staff who stood out & really looked
after us so many thanks to you Jose, had you not looked after us so well I think we would
have felt lost as no one else seemed really bothered. Overall then, would we go again? I think the answer is No, but we are pleased in a way to have seen the islands before they become too commercialised, it would have just been nice to have found something some-where in between.

"Pure relaxation- perfect for us"
Really lovely facilites- we spent day after day wandering from beach to pool and back again! I would recommend you took the all inclusive package offered by the resort as we found the local provisions are limited.
Perfect climate, friendly locals and safe environs- we would definately go again!
