The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region

What shall we say about the region of Abruzzo? For one thing I suppose you could say we're a little spoilt here. We have three national parks and one regional park which altogether cover a third of the region and constitute 'Europe's Greenest Area'. We also have five lakes, three mountain ranges and 75 miles of coastline! We have three principle cities which are L'Aquilla, Pescara and Teramo. Several larger towns (called città) such as Avezzano, Chieti, Sulmona and Lanciano and then there are the hundreds of villages and hamlets (called paesini) to be discovered throughout the myriad valleys and mountains.
In the winter we have cross-country and downhill skiing on one of the many slopes, the most popular of which are centred around the ski resort of Roccaraso which itself has five chair lifts. And in the summer we have 790 square miles of national and regional parks to explore, not to mention the miles and miles of beaches; the nearest are at San Vito twentyfive minutes.
Away from the coast, towards the mountains the scenery is quite spectacular with numerous hilltop towns with a church or castle, local weekly market and feste some time during July or August. Some towns, such as Pennapiedemonte and Civitella Messer Raimondo have month-long celebrations during August. Inland, the food reflects more local dishes, particularly lamb and varieties of pasta, which, if eaten at an 'Agriturismo', will have all been produced at home. This is a wine and olive oil producing area and Montepulciano is the local grape not to be missed along with sparkling white Pro Secco. The pace of life is slow and relaxed - people have the time of day for you and will be really pleased if you say hello to them even if you can't speak any more Italian than this.
Abruzzo is a very undeveloped region and caters mainly to the Italian holiday-makers during the month of August. Outside this time, you will find the beaches fairly deserted during the week. The climate is warm enough from March - November for all outside activities and in December the local ski slopes are open. May to September is the feste season, October is the grape harvest and November the olives are picked and pressed. If you wanted to experience this, you could help with the olive picking and take your own extra virgin olive oil home.
There is history in abundance to be found in the area with ancient buildings, religious sites and ruins perched ridiculously on cliff tops, such as at Roccascalena and Gessopalena. There are mountain grottos at Lama dei Peligni which can be reached by means of a very different sort of cable car.if you like there is possible rafting on river Sangro (It is one of those surprising things that defies description and just has to be experienced.)
It all makes for a holiday that will suit individuals and families of all tastes - Abruzzo is much more than a beach holiday.
The Sant Eusanio del Sangro area
Summertime is the season of 'the festa', every town and village has its own patron saint and associated celebrations. Fireworks during the daytime - oh yes! Each festa is unique and generally involves lots of eating and drinking of local wines and speciality foods often followed by dancing late into the night. Lanciano is the largest of the local towns. It pre-dates Rome as a centre and has several ancient sites to visit, including the church of the Eucharistic Miracle which allegedly contains a drop of the blood of Christ. S.Eusanio as WWF lake of Serranella when your can walking and see more animals.
