The Marche/Abruzzo region
Le Marche (The Marches) is an unspoilt and rural area of Italy characterised by valleys, rolling hills, the majestic Sibillini mountains and long golden sandy beaches. The summers are very warm and sunny. Assissi and Urbino are the two most famous towns in Le Marche, but the many medieval towns and villages are also well worth exploring. In Spring there is an abundance of wildflowers, especially in the mountains. It is fun to visit the colourful local festivals which take place during the year, celebrating food, Saints Days or local history, for example at Ascoli Piceno on the first weekend in August.. Le Marche food is simple and delicious, with black truffles and wild boar as specialities of the region. Meat is often cooked 'alla brace' (over an open fire) but vegetarians are also.well catered for. Around every corner in Le Marche is another breathtaking view.
Sant'Angelo in Pontano
Sant'Angelo is a typical Marche fortified medieval town built around a steep hill which winds its way through narrow streets to a small piazza at the top. The main square at the bottom is where all the shops and and most of the facilties are located, and there is plenty of parking available. There are often outdoor entertainments in the summer months, the bars are open late for drinks, snacks and ice cream, and the atmosphere is lively and friendly., There are occasional performances in the charming 19th century theatre which has recently been renovated. There is a map in the square showing walks in the area. Going further afield, Macerata hosts a season of open air opera in the summer months, and in the mountains water sports, walking, riding, hang gliding and other outdoor pursuits are available.
