The Tuscany region

The miracle of Italy is that all its treasures come packaged in a gorgeous country of majestic mountains, placid lakes, idyllic islands, splendid cities and wonderful walled villages. An ideal climate plus warm and gracious people make Italy a perfect destination for an active vacation, art lovers and the gourmand.

Whether you enjoy visiting the numerous galleries, museums and architectural wonders or visit Tuscany for its beauty, peace and tranquillity, the region has plenty to offer anyone of any age.

Tuscany is also home to the Italian textile industry and for a change in scenery why not visit The Prada Outlet and The Mall Outlet Centre where you can purchase designer clothes at discounted prices.

The main tourist season runs from April to October but, for the serious sightseers, the best time is from autumn to early spring. This means less time waiting in queues and closer unhurried views of what you want to see.

Notable tourist destinations in Tuscany include Lucca, Florence, Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano.

One of the main reasons we love Tuscany is the weather. Close your eyes and picture yourself on one of those lovely summer evenings, relaxing by the pool, the heady perfume of Jasmine hanging in the air, a nice glass of Chianti in hand, mesmerised by the sheer spectacle that is a Tuscan sunset.

Whichever the four seasons you choose to visit Tuscany, the average weather temperatures are as follows:

Spring – The countryside is beautiful with bright green fields dotted with colourful wildflowers and comfortable temperatures ranging between 65° F and 75° F

Summer – The busiest time to visit Italy with predictable sunny hot weather and temperatures ranging from 80° F to 90° F.

Autumn – A beautiful season with fine weather up until the end of October. For those seeking a more active vacation like walking or trekking the weather is comfortable with temperatures reaching 70° F to 75° F

Winter – is a good time to visit with shorter queues for museums and other sightseeing attractions with many sunny days and a winter temperature of around 50° F during the day.

Sant'Andrea di Compito

Lucca (10km)

A short drive from the house is the beautiful walled medieval city of Lucca, a town you will fall in love with. The walls, constructed between 1544 and 1645, standing twelve metres high and four kilometres in length have been perfectly preserved. Behind the walls is an architectural wonder embraced within a fascinating labyrinth of narrow passageways.

Via Fillungo is the main street in Lucca and is lined with excellent shops intermingled with some interesting buildings. Indoor and open air markets are held in Piazza del Carmine and the antique market is held on the 3rd Sat and Sunday of every month in and around Piazza San Giusto.

There are many “ristoranti”, “pizzeria” and typical “trattorie” located in the city and surrounding hills serving a variety of wonderful Tuscan dishes.

Florence (Firenze) (60km)

Bursting with renaissance art and architecture, the city of Florence is a cultural delicacy for visitors.

No trip to Florence would be complete without a trip to the world famous Uffizi Gallery, housing masterpieces from Botticelli, Michelangelo, Titan and Piero della Francesca, among others.

Enjoy lunch in one of the many squares or take a relaxing horse drawn carriage ride around the city before heading off for some retail therapy.

The centre is crowded with shops selling everything from stylish clothing to second hand books. Big fashion names will be found in via de Tournabuoni and via della Vigna Nuova.

Beside the shops, Florence is rich in open-air markets. The market of San Lorenzo, situated at the centre of the city is the preferred destination of tourists.

Pisa (36km)

By far the best known sight in Pisa is the famous Leaning Tower which is one of many architecturally and artistically important structures in the city.

The natural and environmental heritage is particularly attractive and in the area you can visit the Natural Park of Migliarino, the Pisano Mountain or the coastline at Marina di Vecchiano, Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia.

Pisa is full of wonderful and exciting places to eat out, with a wide choice of every kind of food imaginable. The many stylish locations in Pisa and the wide variety of superb mouth-watering menus, often with an emphasis on fish, make Pisa dining an enjoyable experience.

Siena (119km)

One of Italy’s best preserved medieval cities, located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is built on three hills. The city is surrounded by well preserved walls and is filled with fine examples of Gothic architecture. It is also home to one of the world’s most unique piazza’s – Piazza del Campo or il Campo as referred to locally.

Twice a year on July 2 and August 16, Piazza del Campo plays host to the famous Palio horse race, a battle between the contrada (districts) of the city.

If you get the chance to attend the Palio you will never forget the excitement the night before the race. The streets are bathed with soft golden light from hundreds of torches and lanterns. In the town square each contrada lays out rows and rows of 50-foot-long tables and local restaurants serve up huge bowls of pasta, gigantic platters of meat and legendary sides of vegetables. Approximately 25,000 Sienese will eat in these streets at night.

San Gimignano

Take a drive through the ever changing scenery of vineyards and olive trees to reach San Gimignano. Perched on top of a hill, the city has remained intact through centuries and is famous for its numerous towers, fresco’s and other art treasures.

Nearest Beaches (30 mins by car)

The Versilia coastline spreads out from Viareggio to Marina Carrara and is one of the most fashionable coasts of Italy including the sophisticated resort of Forte dei Marmi where you can mingle with the Italian aristocracy.

The superb golden sandy beaches nestle alongside the crystal clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea where you can enjoy a host of water sports such as snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and fishing.

Children

Apart from the pool and beaches to keep the young ones entertained there is so much to do and see that will suit any one of any age. Everyone is sure to feel that there was something for them by the end of the trip.

There are museums in Florence which target children from 8 years old and have special sections for the very young – from 3 to 7.

You do not need to be concerned about meals in restaurants either. Italians love children and they are welcome everywhere. If your children can handle the later nights, no Italian will think it unusual for you to take them, no matter how small they are.
