The Tuscany region
The cottage is located in the hills south-east of Lucca and north of Pisa, in a
protected valley surrounded by pines and olive groves.
Florence is 1 hour east (1 1/2 hours by train), Pisa 40 mins away, the ocean is less than 40 mins away.
Sant'Andrea di Compito
The village has 2 good restaurants and 2 grocery stores; several larger markets
are a short drive away. "Tre Tigli" pizzeria features a crispy-crust pizza
famous all over the Lucca area, plus wonderful local Tuscan dishes. "Il
Circolino" has local-inspired gourmet food, home-made pastas, and seasonal
specialities, at very good prices.
The Camillia Festival in March attracts people from all over the world, who come to
see thousands of camillias, some "trees" over 200 years old, in full bloom. The
village is closed off to traffic so visitors can stroll the streets, photographing
the colorful show. Il Rifugio is right in the middle of the action, so guests just
walk out the door, into the show.
Nearby are plenty of opportunities for hiking and walking on the local trails.
Ambitious guests might consider a stroll up to the summit of Monte Serra, a 10-km.
round trip, with views to Pisa, the sea, and the hills surrounding Lucca.
Wine tasting at Montecarlo is a must. The Il Rifugio house wine, served to our
guests, comes from this area, part of the Lucca region.

"Perfect Tuscan Vacation!"
Amazing! My husband and I visited Il Rifugio over Easter. The cottage is a little hideaway tucked into the Tuscan Countryside. The character and decor of the cottage makes it a perfect place to relax. The Lucca region is a beautiful area with so much to see and do. Il Rifugio makes it easy to relax in the garden, get lost in a book, and enjoy a glass (or two) of Tuscan wine. The village, Sant'Andrea di Compito, sends you back into a medieval world, with olive groves, historic Tuscan villas, and an old church with charming bells reminding you to take in the beauty of the surrounding countryside. The town residents make you feel at home with friendly Buongiornos! Bill and John are the most accomodating hosts! They pay attention to every little detail in preparing the cottage, and provide a warm welcome throughout your stay, with entertaining stories of their Tuscan adventure, and information on the surrounding areas. After just a 5 night stay, we feel very blessed to call them friends. Again, we can not say enough good things about Il Rifugio, our hosts, and the Lucca region! We are already planning our next visit!

"Lovely little apartment in beautiful surrounds with wonderful hosts!"
My wife and I spent a week here on our honeymoon in October 2012 and we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. Ill Rifugio is located in idyllic Tuscan surrounds tucked in the hills outside Lucca but remains within easy driving distance to civilization. The apartment itself had everything we needed including a lovely patio are to the rear, a great shower, big fridge and not to mention a beautiful garden, lovingly tended to by our hosts Bill and John - the whole apartment had great rustic appeal! Bill was really helpful from guiding us to the apartment initially to arranging evening meals at the local restaurants while offering good advice on what to do each day of our stay. We would love to one day return and definitely recommend this lovely place to stay.

"everything we could have hoped for and more"
We wanted something located off the beaten track but close enough to ancient cities of Tuscany. We landed in a gem of a place, beautifully furnished , and very comfortable. The owners were there to welcome us, with a well stocked fridge and the added addition of a special birthday cake, made by a neighbour. We realised immediately that we were in the midst of a welcoming community, and although we had expected to cater almost entirely for ourselves, it was foolish to do so as the two restaurants in the community itself were superb. Bill was always there to advise, not only on routes but also how to get the best out of the planned trip in the time we had available. We always loved to return from our trips, as the gardens were a joy to come home to - as beautiful as the pictures describing "Il Rifugio" on the holiday lettings site. We hope to return one day, and for longer than the week we enjoyed this time. .

"An excellent holiday with excellent hosts"
We had a marvellous week in this beautiful village. Not having been to this part of Italy before, we were more than impressed. Bill and John were fantastic hosts, helping us to find our way around, giving us directions and lots of great local advice. This really made the holiday for us. The cottage was delightful with a lovely shaded courtyard out the back which was perfect for eating breakfast. Thoroughly recommended.

"Just the place to unwind and enjoy some peace and quiet. Lovely!"
Bill, the english speaking owner of the villa next proved to be an excellent host, friendly and very helpful, full of local knowledge and suggestions for day trips out and about. The gardens are lovely and the scenery is amazing. The cottage itself is lovely, watch out for the wooden beams when going upstairs! The local Grocery store ( Alimentri ) is about 5 mins down the road and has everything! Supermarkets are a short drive away. A car is essential and take a satnav ,aim south Volterra etc and you will see some true Tuscan countryside. Lucca and Florence are both not too far away. Would we go again? Most definitley! My Tip: The cottage is in the small lane behind No 13 and No 15. Enjoy!

This property is a gem. It’s in a beautiful village, tucked away in a valley. It’s comfortable (fantastic bed), spacious for two people, equipped with everything you need and oozes character and charm. The private terrace is a lovely place to start the day over breakfast and return to after a day out. The property has all the mod-cons – aircon, satellite TV, WiFi – and feels homely and cared for. The owners could not have been more welcoming and full of excellent advice about how best to visit different parts of Tuscany and recommendations for great things to do near by. They were so generous, showering us with their homegrown tomatoes, pears and more. We could not have felt more at home. Lucca is the perfect town to be close to. It’s less than 15 minutes away and from there it’s an easy train ride to Florence, the coast etc. The village has a few restaurants in it but being able to spend evenings enjoying Lucca (and then be able to get home easily) was a highlight for us. Our Tuscan holiday was even better than we could have hoped - certainly added to by where we stayed. I can’t recommend this property enough.
