The Tuscany region
Tuscany is one of Italyâ??s best-loved regions. It combines a beautiful countryside reminiscent of the landscapes of Renaissance masterpieces, a rich artistic heritage including exquisite art and architecture, a glorious history, excellent wines and delicious food.
Set down between the blue-green Apenines and the turquoise Tyrrhenian Sea, Tuscany is the joyful heart and soul of the ancient Etruscan civilisation which lives on in every city, town and village.
Florence (Firenze) is the administrative center of Tuscany whose Provinces include Arezzo, Livorno, Grossetto, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistaio, Prato and Sienna.
Every town offers unique characteristics, charm, and regional cuisine making each one worthy of your time.
Tuscany is also well known for its splendid landscapes with charming low hills covered with olive groves, vineyards, woods, isolated cypress trees, and beautiful old farmhouses, all part of a landscape that seems to have been carefully tended since the dawn of time. Tuscany is a refuge for the spirit as well as an ideal place for rambles or for idle contemplation of views that have not changed in centuries.
The castles and country churches are a standing order for the many visitors to Tuscany from all over the world.
Tuscany is also the home for the famous wines of Chianti and Montalcino.
There is so much to discover in this region that the above are just a few of the reasons why people enthusiastically return year after year and share their experiences with others.
Sant Andrea a Montecchio
Located in the heart of Tuscany, just 60 km south of Florence, Siena is Italy´s best preserved medieval. It has maintained its lovely medieval buildings and Gothic architecture, and todayâ??s new constructions adapt to this character and beauty.
Siena is built on three small hills within the city walls, divided into three areas, called "Terzi".
- "Terzo di Citta" was the earliest inhabited area of the city, and holds Piazza Postierla; the Cappella delle Ceneri di Sant'Ansano; the Duomo, Siena's gorgeous black and white cathedral; and the museum of Santa Maria della Scala.
- "Terzo di Camollia", named after the city gate Porta Camollia, consists of the main social and shopping street -Via Banchi di Sopra, with Piazza Salimbeni and Piazza Tolomei; and the Basilicas S. Maria in Provenzano, S. Francesco, and the Fortezza.
-"Terzo di San Martino" expands around the Francigena way, the route to Rome for the pilgrims of the patron saint S.Martino. The area includes the Piazza del Campo at the heart of the city; the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena's City Hall, which contains the famous frescos on government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and access to the Torre di Mangia with a spectacular view of the Senese countryside, and the famous fountain Fonte Gaia.
These terzi are subdivided into 17 contrade. Loyalty to one's contrada is an important part of Siena´s culture and history. The competition between each contrada takes centre stage in Siena's world-famous horserace, Il Palio. An unbroken medieval tradition since the 11th century that takes place annually on 2 July and 16 August when the unique shell shaped Piazza del Campo is converted into a racetrack.
Siena is a major tourist attraction and home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe, which adds for a vibrant student atmosphere and a bustling daily life. Siena offers many cultural events, concerts, cinema, theatre and a wide range of sporting activities. In the summer, there is the Siena Jazz Festival, and the classical concert by the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. Settimana Musicale Senese features various concerts around the city.
Siena stores offer many locally made items, such as, leather products, neckties, fabrics, glazed terracotta, gold jewellery, and of course local food, such as, Panforte, Ricciarelli, Pici and many wines. Every Wednesday morning a huge market is held around the Fortezza Mediceana.
The Senese countryside also boasts a lovely landscape of natural beauty. There is the Chianti landscape between Florence and Siena, hills woven with vineyards and Olive estates, and beautiful towns like San Gimignano and Monteriggioni. South of Siena, the Arbia valley leads to the hill-top town of Montalcino, home to the famous Brunello wine. The area La Crete Senese features harsh rock formations, soft rounded hills, and a unique landscape grain-field below a medieval fortress.
Siena wonderfully blends the natural beauty of Tuscany with the historic elegance of its medieval influence.

"Reality of a dream!"
I was looking for a quiet week with a beautiful panorama not far from Siena, to enjoy after the Palio and before participating in an intensive celebration later in July within Siena. I studied the information on Sant'Andrea a Montecchio and decided that my friend and I could manage fine without having to rent a car. With the kindness and understanding of the owner, we did one food shopping expedition which served us well. Walking on the road to the nice little town of Costalpino (which I had anticipated) would have been treacherous. The "bar" across the street actually is a men's club, which doesn't open until 4:30 in the afternoon. The bus stop really is very close and has excellent service to and from Siena (and little Costalpino's lovely restaurant). The apartment is very well-equipped, with many new items. Staying in it was very enjoyable! The privacy of the large open spaces within this former monastery ground area is luxurious. There were beautiful sights for sketching and painting within these walls and also plenty just beyond. Convenience via buses allowed us to arrive in Florence at 9 am one morning and enjoy a full day there. Highly recommend! We did it without a car.
