The Sansepolcro area
This town founded around the 1000 AD is an example of a walled regional town. Small and with a lovely and interesting Roman nucleus, the centre of town was erected like a military defensive position which features mazy narrow lanes lined with some historic buildings.
In the Upper Tiber Valley of south east Tuscany sits the relaxed ad somewhat bizarre town of Sansepolcro. The town has a wonderful ambiance and is worth visiting for that alone. It also has, like all Tuscan towns, fantastic local produce and a welcoming nature. On the second Saturday of each September the Palio della Balestra (crossbow tournament) is held. Here, after the traditional ceremonies of the herald proclaiming the challenge and the flag waving ceremony, the inhabitants of the town gather, all dressed in period renaissance costume, to watch the crossbow-men of Sansepolcro take on their rivals from Gubbio.
