The Dumfries and Galloway region
From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain’s best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.
The town of Sanquhar, in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland, was a former Royal Burgh and sits on the River Nith. The name of the town means ‘Old Fort’ and is derived from the Gaelic ‘Seann Cathair’. The castle’s ancient ruins can still be seen at the southern end of the town.
