The Costa de la Luz region

The Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) is one of Spain's best kept secrets with it's miles of unspoilt beaches and with an average 300 days of sunshine each year it has been a favourite destination for Spaniards for many years. Only in recent years and following the opening of the Portugal/Spain road bridge has it become more widely known as a holiday destination.
For families: in addition to the numerous spotless and uncrowded beaches, there is a water park at nearby Cartaya (35 mins), or Donana National Park (500km2) (1hr travel).-This is a UNESCO heritage site, where rare birds, such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle and abundant wildlife like the Iberian Lynx can be seen.
Historically the area was occupied by the Moors and the evidence is to be seen in the architecture of many towns and villages, including of course Seville, with it's magnificent cathedral and narrow and fascinating streets.
For those with an interest in mining, there is a museum, and working railway, near Huelva, showcasing the years of British influence in this area.
Huelva province is renowned for it's fertile ground, producing many of the fruits and vegetables that find their way to our tables (particularily strawberries and oranges).
Travel is generally conducted by road along an excellent motorway network either East to Seville, or West to the Portugese Algarve, then north to Lisbon. The local roads are however a joy to travel on, being well maintained and relatively traffic free.
The Sanlucar de Guadiana area
Sanlucar de Guadiana is a small (c 500 residents), charming and very traditional Spanish" white village" (pueblo blanco). It nestles on the banks of the Guadiana which forms the natural border between Spain and Portugal, and the locals warmly welcome visitors. There are various festivals held during the year to celebrate local and national events and colourful processions to watch or participate in. Of particular note there is the procession of the 3 Kings (6th January); and the Romeria (early May), which is a 3-4 day event of music/hospitality, conducted outdoors and under canvas near the village.
The village has an all weather football field; a padel court; area for playing petanque (particular favourite on Saturday afternoons with visitors).New for 2012 is a sandy beach area constructed on the riverside.
The ruined Castillo San Marcos, overlooks the village and has magnificent views of the river and surrounding countryside, and there are recently constructed walkways along the river banks to the north and south.
For one euro, you can take a ferry trip to Portugal and enjoy the delights of another totally different culture/language, with another castle/museum to visit. The ferry will also provide longer trips by prior arrangement if you would like to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this special area.

A lovely relaxing time in a very typical Spanish village. Weather was perfect and it was so nice to enjoy Spain as a 'local', something difficult to experience on the coast. The house has everything that you would need, very clean and tidy and the friendly owners live in the village to offer any advice if necessary. Being on the river and having the ferry means you can visit Portugal very easily, an added bonus. All in all if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful holiday you should certainly consider 'Casa Limon". Oh and brush up on your Spanish, you'll need it. Response: We were delighted to read your positive review and excellent comments regarding our property and the area. The peace and tranquillity of this unique village make it an ideal place for our guests to enjoy the culture and cuisine of the "real" Spain, at all times of the year. Thank you again for your booking and we look forward to you possibly making a return visit. |

Just returned from wonderfully relaxing week in Casa Limon, a lovely town house situated in a small Andalucian village. The villa is very well equipped, spotless and has air conditioning. The owners live close by and were on hand to welcome us and show us around the village. The nearest beach is a very small but lovely riverside beach on the Portuguese side of the river. So simple to cross the river using the local "ferry service". Several small bars in the village and one or two places to eat super local food at very reasonable prices. We travelled to some of the beautiful beaches on Costa de La Luz and Monte Gordo in Portugal (45 mins drive) but were pleased we had chosen to stay away from those busy resorts. If you want a quiet, relaxing break in an authentic Spanish village then I can highly recommend Casa Limon. We felt we had the best of both worlds as we were happy to drive on some days and relax in San Lucar on others. Perfect! Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay in this authentic Andalucian village and thank you for the positive comments in your review of our property and the area.Thank you for the booking and we hope to see you return for another visit soon. |

I spent a week here with a friend in February and although the weather was mixed, enjoyed a very relaxing week at Casa Limon. The house is very well equipped and the owners live locally so are on hand to give advice and information on anything, very welcoming. The village of SanLucar is a lovely, quiet village away from it all, very Spanish and locals are very friendly. Set on the river and border with Portugal, there are lots of lovely places to visit locally and about forty minutes to the coast. Very good for walking and if you have a boat, ideal. Beautiful countryside and a very straighforward trip from Faro airport. Definately will be sating here again. Response: Delighted you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back to the place that everyone who visits just loves. |
