About the home

This spacious (1500 sq ft) ground floor condo has been recently remodelled. It provides superb accommodation, sleeping up to 6 people in 3 bedrooms with 2 full bathrooms. Secure wi-fi is avalable in the condo.

The condo is in an ideal island location - situated only a few steps from the beach that leads directly to Lighthouse beach and the fishing pier. There is easy access to the causeway back to the mainland.

There are tennis courts on site, as well as a heated swimming pool and bike storage for your own bikes. These facilities provide an ideal spot for couples, families or singles looking to relax, exercise and have fun.

Excellent shops, restaurants, supermarkets, fishing licence & bait shops, as well as bike, moped and boat hire are all available on the island just a short distance away.

You can drive or bike through the Ding Darling Wildlife Reserve that occupies almost 40% of the island. There are no highrise buildings on the island (3 storey limit) and very few "chain" stores.

Sanibel Island is famous world-wide for its shelling beaches. The island's east-west orientation provides a constant supply of seashells, including those special rare shells, not easily found elsewhere.

The decor and quality of furniture reflect the fact that this property is cherished and enjoyed by the owners for several months each year.

Facilities

Further details indoors:
The modern kitchen is fully equipped. The living room features a 42" flat screen TV and Blu-Ray/DVD player. The master bedroom includes a king-sized bed, TV and recently renovated en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom includes 2 single beds. The third bedroom includes a queen-sized bed and TV. The second bathroom has also been recently renovated. There is a screened-in porch (called a "lanai") with a ceiling fan and electric BBQ. Walk out onto the patio to view San Carlos Bay, just a few hundred yards away.

You can walk around the east point of the island, view the pelicans and dolphins from the fishing pier, and look for that special sea shell on the miles of white sand, before stopping in Gepetto's for an amazing Pinocchio's ice-cream experience. Sanibel and Captiva (at the other end of the island) are also renowned for spectacular sunsets.

Further details outdoors:
There is a large outside heated pool, as well as 2 (hard) tennis courts. The grounds around the condos are beautifully landscaped, featuring many sub-tropical plants. There is a large pond (previously used by the ferry, before the causeway was built) that attracts many large birds, including herons and egrets. Ospreys are a common sight overhead.

The Florida / Florida Gulf Coast region

Sanibel Island is located in the Gulf of Mexico on the south west coast of Florida. On the other end of the causeway connecting Sanibel to the mainland is the lively town of Fort Myers Beach. Sanibel has been described as a "sub-tropical island paradise" as well as a "seashell world capital".

The residents of Sanibel have been successful in blocking highrise and high density development with the result that the whole island has a feel of a nature reserve (but with great restaurants and shops!). Almost half the island is occupied by the Ding Darling Wildlife reserve where white pelicans and roseate spoonbills are a common sight, as well as the usual abundance of herons, egrets and ibis's.

The Sanibel area

On Sanibel:
Ding Darling Nature Reserve - great place to see all kinds of wildlife, excellent info centre
Bailey Shell Musuem - amazing collection of shells
The beaches - miles of them!, lots of shells and birds, and watch out for dolphins!
Bike Trails - you can bike for miles (even all the way to Captiva for lunch - if you feel up to the challenge!)
Gepetto's - for Pinocchio's Ice-Cream - a treat for all the family
The Historical Sanibel Lighthouse - still in operation, but now it's automated

On Captiva (far end of the island, about 12 miles away):
Amazing sunsets - view them from Blind Pass, or from the beach at The Mucky Duck (our favourite place!)
McCarthy's Marina - for a variety of boat trips

Off Island
Fort Myers Beach: a variety of T-shirt stores, restaurant and bars (including Nemo's - our favourite for happy hour, live music and a great sunset view!)

Fort Myers: the Edison-Ford museum (very interesting...who would have thought that the search for rubber would have led to this?!)

The nearest airport is South West Florida International Airport (located in Fort Myers) - it is 45 minutes drive from our condo. We recommend that you fly into a major US city (there are a few to choose from), with a direct connecting flight to Fort Myers.

South West Florida International airport is well-serviced by the major airlines. All the major car rental companies eg Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, National, Alamo) are also available. We have used JetBlue for our connecting flights to Fort Myers

“Peaceful, relaxing, idyllic....Fabulous!” We visited Sanibel in August 2012 & stayed at the Lighthouse Condo's with our 3 children, aged 9,12 &16. The condo was very clean, welcoming and comfortable. Plenty of parking space, good air con & parking opposite for the tandem bikes we hired...everything was so easy! Everything was brilliant the place itself was light & airy, there was plenty of storage space, a well equipped kitchen, extremely comfortable beds & plenty of room for all of us! Also it smelt lovely & clean, with plenty of clean towels & bedding. The place itself was so peaceful & relaxing! you step out from the back porch door onto the patio, turn left & the you're greeted with such a lovely sight! swaying palm trees frame the 1 minute walk along the grass the beach. The beach was small, but perfect! So peaceful I felt like we were on a desert Island, so easy to just stroll back to get a cold drink or snack. The kids loved the easiness of everything, the fact they could just meet us at the beach, go back to the condo whenever they wanted or go to the pool. They really loved staying here too! We have had one of our best family holidays! We often walked along the beach towards the pier, where my 16 year old son would fish. Then carry on walking as the shelling is amazing! Also we would sit as a family in the late afternoon with our drinks & snacks, & watch the dolphins & pelicans, then the sunset...beautiful! Plenty of places to eat, we drove mostly, but could easily cycle to Pinnochios ice cream parlour, which has the most gorgeous ice cream. The whole island in August has a very slow, easy pace, which we all found beneficial....we were so chilled out! We travelled from the UK to visit, and would definitely do it again! Ron & Lesley were lovely, and gave us loads of info before we arrived. Sanibel itself is now forever one of my favourite places.
