The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight lies off the south coast of England and the weather here tends to be slightly milder than the mainland. It can be reached by ferry from either:

Southampton to East Cowes,

Lymington to Yarmouth,

Portsmouth to Fishbourne

or by hovercraft from Southsea to Ryde.

Attractions on the Island appeal to a wide range of interests and age groups including:

English Heritage historical buildings such as Osbourn House and Carisbrooke Castle,

Natural Trust properties and walks - such as Bembridge Windmill and the Needles Old Battery

Wildlife and conservation attractions - Amazon Adventure and the Isle of Wight Zoo and Tiger Sanctuary ,

Theme parks - The Needles Park (with the chairlift down to the beach), Robin Hill and Blackgang Chine,

And there are the Botanical gardens in Ventnor and oddities such as the model village in Godshill, the Needles and the coloured sands at Alum Bay

There are walking festivals in May and October, a cycling festival in the autumn and many special events and carnivals throughout the summer with the infamous garlic festival taking place in mid August.

There are innumerable places to eat out (or in) whilst you are here. There are farmers markets, inns and restaurants, many of which run special offers during the daytime in the week. There are all major supermarkets (except Asda) on the island. The centre of the island is Newport where there are chain stores and traditional shops - although as a small town it certainly does not have the choice of major mainland cities.

The chalet site is in Yaverland approximately half way up Culver Down with amazing views across Sandown Bay and there is a blue flag beach withing easy walking distance.

The tourist area of Sandown with its small supermarkets and basic souvenir shops is just a mile away, with Shanklin (and its cliff lift) a further mile and a half away along the flat revetment past some humerus and traditional beach huts.

Public transport is excellent on the Island and there is a bus stop just outside the site entrance.

Within walking distance are the Zoo, Dinosaur Island interactive experience, Sandham Rides and the pier with its own attractions. If you just want fresh air and exercise there are numerous walks both flat and more challenging, including award winning safe sandy beaches, clifftop, woodland and downland areas.

About 2 miles away is the Heights Leisure Centre with 2 swimming pools and fully fitted gym as well as the Medical Centre and chemist.

The childrens play area on the seafront now also has some adult gym equipment for a gentle safe workout.
