The Loire Valley region
This part of the Loire Valley is not as touristy as some areas but there are plenty of things to do and see.
The nearby town of La Charite sur Loire is a medieval town with a large 12th century church and a newly renovated priory with ramparts from which you can get a great view over the town and the bridge crossing the Loire. It is also known as La Ville du Livre with many second hand bookshops. La Charite also has several festivals for books and music.
This is in the department of Nievre which is in the province of Burgundy and the main town is Nevers which has a cathedral and a site dedicated to St Bernadette who founded Lourdes.
On the Cher side of the river the province is known as Berry. There is the main town of Bourges with an extraordinary cathedral, many wooden framed houses and plenty of things to visit such as the Palais de Jacques Coeur, museums, restaurants etc. There is also a special route designed to take in all the chateaux of the area - 14 in all.
On the river Loire one can hire kayaks and come back downstream with the current from La Charite to Sancerre.
There are also several sites where the disused railway line has been adapted for bikes and one can ride along the rails called Cyclorail.
About an hour's drive away there is a site where they are building a medieval castle using 13th century techniques called Guedelon. It wont be complete until around 2024.
There are quite a few villages with potteries dotted around the area.
The summers can be quite hot - up to 40C, generally starting in June. In September there is great activity with the Vendange - grape picking.
Around Lugny (which has nothing to do with the Champagne drink by the way) it is mainly agricultural growing rapeseed, barley, wheat, maize and sunflowers.
It is fairly flat so excellent for cycling and there is now a route La Loire a Velo which around 800km long starting near Nevers and going all the way to the coast at St Nazaire.
There are two golf clubs within 15 minutes drive, tennis courts, heated swimming pool near Sancerre and many restaurants a short distance away. There is also a riding school and plenty of nature expeditions. There is also a canal called Canal Lateral a la Loire which hires out boats.
As we are far from the sea people use the banks of the Loire like a beach as it is so sandy and the water is shallow in the summer.
