Monte Pedrosu Apt 3, Sardinia

Cala Girgolu Beach , a picture postcard arc of white sand edging a turquoise sea is just 1.5 Kms from our Monte Pedrosu Apts and when we were there in September, was rather quaintly serviced by a small boat which stopped by intermittently, serving gelato (ice cream), cold drinks and coffees from its deck and undoubtedly calling in it the variety of pretty coves along the coastline.

The eleven apartments are appealingly set in pretty cloistered gardens around an attractive free form pool surrounded by sea view sunbathing terraces. Each is individual in its layout but all are modern and bright with a well equipped open plan kitchen/living areas, spacious bedrooms, equipped with fans, (see individual description below) and a smart shower room. The covered balconies or garden terraces provide a popular extension to the living area and you can chose between either sea or garden views.

The prettily tinted Monte Pedrosu Apartments sit on a sweep of wooded headland that stretches from the village of Monte Pedrosu out towards rocky Capo Coda Cavallo off which lie the islands of Molarotto and distinctively shaped Isola Tavolara, once a kingdom in its own right. Here and there, similar terracotta roofs of select privately owned apartments and grand villas spread out across the cape, attractively punctuating the landscape.

The village of Monte Pedrosu is just 600m away, within a 15mins stroll and conveniently offers a choice of two trattorias, as well as a cafe, a butcher and small supermarket but if you like to be spoilt for choice, then you won't be disappointed by the small town of San Teodoro, just a 10 mins drive with an array of villas, shops and restaurants and also coincidentally blessed with a vast gently shelving white sand beach that would compete on equal terms with some of the best of the Caribbean.

There are three washing machines in the grounds for the use of guests.

We consider car hire useful, but please bear in mind that if you intend arriving by means of bus from Olbia Airport (4 per day) you will need to carry your luggage the last 600ms - taxis are few and far between in Sardinia.

Apartment 3 - First floor, Sea Views - Sleeps 5

This first floor apartment has a private staircase leading to a small balcony where a door leads into the kitchen area, well equipped with a full oven and fridge/freezer fitted amongst the tidy run of cupboards. The bright and modern living area is nicely furnished with table and chairs and a sofa bed, which could be useful should you wish to take a 5th person. French doors lead from the living room onto the lovely covered balcony, with views over the pool towards the sea. The twin bedroom has windows looking over the gardens and the double bedroom has French doors which open to the rear balcony.

There are three washing machines in the grounds for the use of guests.

Extra maid service can be arranged and paid for locally, if required.

The apartments are appealingly set around an attractive free form pool in pretty cloistered gardens complete with barbecue and pizza oven hidden away amongst its foliage and quietly tended by the owners who live in a ground floor apartment and speak no English. However, armed with a phrase book and sense of humour, we are sure you will soon be on more than nodding acquaintance, as they are looking forward to welcoming their guests in typically unobtrusive Sardinian way. The apartment is modern and bright with a double and twin bedroom, a smart shower room and open plan, well equipped kitchen/living area.

The Sardinia region

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean, a name familiar to many but hitherto relatively unknown as a holiday destination, Sardinia has over 1,800km of coastline, much of it utterly unspoilt and fringed by white sand beaches lapped by crystal clear waters.
The Gulf of Orosei on the Sardinian east coast and just over an hours drive south from Olbia Airport covers an area of some 80 square kilometres from Cape Comino in the north to Cape Di Monte Santo further south. Noted for its craggy white cliffs and powder white coves backed by wild and uninhabited mountainous regions, it's wonderful country for hikers and nature lovers. Here too, the coastal waters of Sardinia are so clean and clear that colonies of beautiful coral grow on the seabed and the myriadas of fish and other marine fauna attract Scuba divers from around the world, as well as the local fisherman of course.
The medieval market town of Orosei, from which the area takes its name, stands on the banks of the River Cedrino and boasts a number of lovely old churches and a warren of narrow cobbled streets leading to numerous small piazzas. The town is surrounded by lush green farmland bursting with orange and olive plantations and edged with a spectacular stretch of coastline and many, many kilometres of powder white sand beaches fringed by fragrant pinewoods.
Matching the beauty of its coastline, the hinterland of Sardinia is a magnificent and uncompromising landscape of high rugged mountains, deep gorges and rolling wooded countryside, still in some places inhabited by wild boar, a Sardinian delicacy and quite commonly featured on the menus of restaurants throughout the island.
Although wild boar might not be to everyone's taste, the local seafood, cheeses and various pasta dishes are extremely good. Olbia, in the north of Sardinia is particularly renowned for its mussel beds and cozze alla marinara (aka moules marine ) is a favourite starter. However for something unique, try the local seafood risotto, flamboyantly flavoured by hard little crustaceans and absolutely delicious!
Finally, its worth mentioning that the East Coast of Sardinia including the area of Orosei and many parts of Sardinia for that matter remain refreshingly Non-Anglicised and a phrase book can be useful for interpreting menus and general communication.

The San Teodoro / Monte Pedrosu area

As the saying goes, less is often more and this can truly be said of the little village of Monte Pedrosu. A convenient 25 kms from Olbia, its supermarket, butcher, choice of 2 restaurants, cafe and a hairdresser more than adequately meet the immediate needs of the population in its vicinity, supplemented by the occasional traveling shop selling artisan products.

The rural community spreads east of the old coast road (now superceded by a motor way rolling south of Olbia further inland) towards the Capo Coda Cavallo where the granite rock is blanketed in spring by brightly coloured blossoms of the maquis vegetation, filling the air with the spicy aroma of lavender, thyme, myrtle and rosemary.

Back on the coast, there is a seemingly infinite choice of beaches and coves, some accessible by car and others only by foot, continuing around the promontory to the 3km stretch of white sand at San Teodoro. The "local beach" Cala Girgolu is an arc of sand framed by junipers and rose-coloured granite and any lack of facilities is made up for by a visiting boat selling gelato, cool drinks and heady espresso coffee from its deck. The seascape here is haphazardly scattered with uninhabited small islands and dominated by the Isola Tavolara, once a kingdom in its own right.

A "must see" is Cala Brandinchi, nick-named Tahaiti because of its exotic appearance with fine sand surrounded by resinous pine forest, but you will undoubtedly find your own favourite strand.
