San Teodoro area
The deepest canyon in Europe In The territory of the Barbagia, in central-eastern Sardinia, immersed in the spectacular Supramonte, surrounded by thick forests and splendid oleanders, we find the most imposing natural abyss of Italy and of Europe: the Gole of Su Gorroppu also called the Big Canyon of Europe. This is one of the more charming and impressive symbols of the Gennargentu mountains. The enormous vertical walls surpass 400 metres in height. The gorge is a very deep one, made of calcified rock, sculpted by the force of the Rio Flumineddu over millions of years, between the Supramonte of Orgosolo and Urzulei; the river carries on beyond the gorge, spreading out into little lakes, then going towards the Dorgali Valley, where it feeds others streams.
The highest sand dunes in Europe On of the less known zones of Sardinia (but not the least interesting), is the south east of the island, where we find a complex of major sand dunes that spread out into the communities of Arbus, Guspini and Gonnosfanadiga. Piscinas is one of the more important dune complexes at regional, national and Mediterranean levels. The Dunes have a great landscape scenic impact that visitors find breathtaking. The beach extends for about six kilometres with dunes up to a height of fifty meters with various flourishing clumps of lilies. The Piscinas dunes and the Mountain of Arcuentu are found in the village of Arbus.
The largest open air museum in the world Sardinia can be considered the largest open air museum in the world, with its 7000 nuraghi, the mysterious stone constructions that for their architectural peculiarity can be compared to the pyramids, found in all of the territory, the largest group going back to the times of the Dolmen - the graves of the giants, the sacred wells, the Domus de Janas (houses carved in the rocks) - all typical of the nuragic settlements make Sardinia unique in the world.
