The Basque Country/Navarre region
The Basque Country (Euskadi) has a totally different feel to it from the rest of Spain. Its temperate climate can be more wet than the rest of Spain.
Its landscapes are lush and its people are known for their very difficult language and desires for independence.
As well there are significant differences between the three provinces: Vizcaya (Biscay), dominated by the resurging Bilbao; Guipuzcoa, a land of farmers and fisherman; and finally, mountainous Alava.
Navarre, which was once a Basque kingdom, is claimed by nationalists as part of Euskadi, but does not quite fall within this autonomous region.
San Sebastian in the Basque Country of Northern Spain a treasure of a resort. It sets itself apart from the mainstream beach resorts.
A summer capital of Spain, it is here where the Belle Epoque (beautiful era) lives on. Situated on an excellent spot on the Bay of Biscay, it's surrounded by verdant mountains. In the summer the population swells as many Spanish head to this elegant resort to escape the heat.
It is a bustling city with a population of 185,000 inhabitants, of which 16,500 are university students. San Sebastian is an ideal first-stop for trips to some of the Basque country's most fascinating towns.
