The North West Italy / Italian Riviera/Liguria region
The resort town of San Remo may be small in stature, but it is grandiose in style and atmosphere.
The streets of San Remo are lined with polished world-class hotels, exotic gardens, and seaside promenades. Long a haven for European aristocracy, San Remo is located on the western rim of the Italian Riviera, about 30 miles east of Nice, France.
The old town area has a rich mediaeval heritage. The modified cathedral of San Siro originally dates back to the thirteenth century. The interior preserves a Crucifix by Maragliano and a canvas by Pancalino showing San Siro surrounded by other saints. The single-nave sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa goes back to the seventeenth century. Here you can admire frescoes by Giacomo Antonio Boni and a painting from the Barnaba da Modena School (late fourteenth century) as well as paintings by Domenico Fiasella.
One of the most popular sights in San Remo is the famous Municipal Casino, housed in an art nouveau building and supplying well-dressed visitors the opportunity to try their luck at the gaming tables. Shoppers will want to make a beeline for Corso Matteotti, a main shopping street in downtown San Remo. Small boutiques and sidewalk vendors sell such items as crystal, lace, wood carvings, jewellery, leather, fashion attire, and of course, the flowers that have made San Remo famous with gardeners throughout Europe.
San Remo area
Liguria shows the world many faces. Inland is a Medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance postcard of mountainous terrain and historical museums. On the coast is the Italian Riviera, playground to the wealthy and perennially beautiful. The region is famous for its taste in wine and food that have made Italy a household word. Vacationers should take the opportunity to immerse themselves in this rich culture. No standing in the sidelines.
How to get there
Fly to Nice Airport. To reach Castello Devachan, take the A8 motorway from Nice Airport, and drive for 50 kms in the direction of Genoa. After crossing the Italian frontier, take the exit marked San Remo, and drive into town, aiming for the Casino. The Corso Degli Inglesi is about a five-minute drive away.

Further details indoors: The Castello Devachan was purchased in 1890 by the English Count Orazio Savile of Mexborough. The elder Lord Mexborough acquired the castle to live there with his young spouse Lady Ivy, despite his age of 75 years. The Count of Mexborough had become a Buddhist after having lived in India for thirty years, it was he who named the Castello Devachan. Before it was called Villa Silvia Mexborough, after his first wife.
The Castello Devachan was built and designed by the engineer Pietro Agosti (from Sanremo) with the help of engineer Winter. The building developer was Costanzio Sappia. The architecture of the castle was in the liberty style. The Castello Devachan stands majestically on the hill of Berigo, a few minutes from the centre of Sanremo, set amongst other beautiful villas, between palm trees, orange trees, cacti, banana, and other tropical and Mediterranean plants.
On April 19, 1920, the First World War Allies leaders, working through the League of Nations, gathered at the Castello Devachan in San Remo, Italy to carve up Turkey. With the last dusk of the San Remo Conference, the conferees granted France the mandate for both Syria and Lebanon. The British received the mandate for Iraq, and also Palestine, under a provision creating a Jewish homeland.
The Allied prime ministers meeting at the Castello Devachan in San Remo discussed a number of territorial problems, including the general framework of the Turkish peace treaty. The Allies agreed to leave the Fiume question up to the governments of Italy and the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The delegates also considered ways of disposing of Class A mandates. Under the League of Nations system, Class A mandates were in the final stages of preparation for independence.

July 2003
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
There was everything we needed in the apartment.
The beaches were all very clean and the restaurants were good. Two which were especially good were La Pigniese & Mare Blu.
The market on Saturday & Tuesday morning was very good for bargains. The shops in town were wonderful.
So you have it all! Beaches, food, or just watch the world go by.
We will be back again and very soon we hope.
