Casa Sergente
About the home
The Ramello family run agritourism country holidays in Pietrabruna, a small village located in inland Liguria at 350m above sea level, in the province of Imperia, a mere 10km from the sea. The apartment with terrace overlooks a magnificent valley of olive groves. It was recently renovated in keeping with local architecture, using typical materials such as slate, stone and wood. The furnishing has also been chosen with care: there are antique cupboards, wooden tables and period furniture.
We care about our environment. We do not use pesticides, harsh cleaning products in the house. We recycle, we try not to waste water and electricity and ask our guests to do the same.

Enquire nowThe North West Italy / Italian Riviera/Liguria region
We are in the heart of the Western Ligurian Riviera, 15 minutes from the sea yet at the same time immersed in the lush green of inland Liguria, with a breathtaking backdrop of mountains.
The Ligurian Riviera is greatly renowned for its mild climate. Summers are invariably hot. However its altitude (350m above sea level) ensures that the nights are almost always cool. Winters are never harsh and it is often possible to eat outdoors, under the olive groves, whose silvery green lend a unique atmosphere to the countryside. Temperatures are also very comfortable throughout Spring and Autumn.
The San Remo / Pietrabruna area
The apartment is situated in the historic centre of Pietrabruna, 15 minutes from San Lorenzo al Mare, 20 minutes from Imperia and 30 minutes from Diana Marina, San Bartolomeo al Mare, Arma di Taggia and Bussana Vecchia (historic Bussana); 40 minutes from Sanremo and from Alassio; less than an hour away from the Cote d’Azur, Menton, Nice and Montecarlo, and an hour’s distance from Genova.
Pietrabruna is a typical village of inland Liguria situated 350m above sea level. Its narrow “carrugi” (typical Ligurian medieval alleys) climb uninterruptedly until they open out into charming little squares (“piazzette”, small piazzas). There are many slate gateways, some of which are topped with bas-reliefs and inscriptions.
The small 12th century church of San Gregorio is one of the oldest monuments in the entire region, and represents ancient Roman style in all its glory. The parish church, dedicated to San Matteo (Saint Matthew), was rebuilt in 1844 and is the only example of neoclassic building to be found in the valley. The Oratory of the Confraternity is a reconstruction dating to at least the seventeenth century, on the site of an earlier original building. The economy of Pietrabruna is based on the cultivation of flowers (anemones and buttercups in particular) and ornamental greenery which is sold commercially in the nearby flower market of Sanremo and are, for the most part, destined for export.
Olive growing also plays and important role, whereas lavender growing, while still continuing in smallholdings, is gradually being supplanted by floriculture.
PATRON SAINT’S DAY: SAINT MATTHEW 21 SEPTEMBER
This is a village festival with music and an open-air restaurant, open at the end of July/beginning of August. In summer, musical performances, cabaret shows, theatrical performances and village fêtes take place all over the province of Imperia.

A MUST:
There is a cycle track nearby , which is one of the longest in the Mediterranean, 24 km from San Lorenzo al mare to Sanremo (in the next future it will reach Ospedaletti), easily accessible by pedestrians and cyclists .
Once part of the italian Railways, it runs along the sea, goes through small villages where it is possible to rent a bike, to find snack bars and small hotels where to sleep overnight.
Quiet beaches where you can relax after your ride, are just a stone’s throw.
BEACHES:
Pietrabruna is not far from the sea.The nearest beaches are to be found at San Lorenzo al Mare, 15 minutes from Pietrabruna. There is a wide range of public and private beaches to choose from, sandy, rocky or pebbled (see photo). Imperia also boasts some beautiful beaches: in Porto Maurizio you can find the public and private beaches of Borgo Prino. The beaches of the “Marina” are almost all private, requiring an entry fee. The beaches along the “Spianata” seafront at Oneglia are sandy and pebbles, public and private. At the end of the “Spianata” you will find another very beautiful seafront called “L’INCOMPIUTA”, which will take you to Diana Marina in about 20 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by bike. The route takes in some lovely pebbled and rocky beaches.
Pietrabruna is the ideal point of departure for those wishing to discover the uniqueness of Ligurian nature: marmots look out over the sea from the 1100 metre altitude of Monte Faudo, orchids and very rare flowers border the paths, caves bear silent witness to ancient human habitation.
The nearest town is Imperia. It owes its name to the river Impero, that separates Oneglia from Porto Maurizio.
Clung to the promontory of Parasio, Porto Maurizio is a tangle of streets and little winding alleys. The medieval centre of Parasio offers a wonderful view over the gulf of Imperia. The Naval Museum in Piazza Duomo is also of great interest.
At the foot of Parasio, lie the ancient villages of Marina, Foce and Borgo Prino, which today are part of the town. Here you can find excellent restaurants and cosy cafés or you can stroll along the beautiful promenades and the little tourist port of the Marina, from where, in the summer you can sail to watch the whales and dolphins.
In the centre of Oneglia you can find the most elegant shops; along the Marina, right at the back of the harbour, there is “old Oneglia”, with its ancient fishermen's houses, its covered market, its open air market, and its tiny shops specialising in local cuisine.
The Museum of Olive Oil is well worth a visit. Here you can learn about the century-old history of olive oil and its processing.
San Remo , only 40 minutes away from Pietrabruna, boasts a colourful past. Its fame as an aristocratic playground, world-class hotels, exotic gardens, seafront promenades, a world famous gambling Casino, designer shops and boutiques, and an internationally renowned music festival tend to overshadow the fact that San Remo has a rich medieval heritage which it would be a shame to miss. For example, there is a thirteenth century cathedral with an original Maragliano crucifix and Pancalino canvas and beautiful frescoes and paintings. it is also famous for its flower market, where millions of flowers are exported every day all over the world. Hanbury Gardens, one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, are less than 15 minutes away from Pietrabruna. Just an hour's drive, Genoa has the biggest historic centre in Europe; its Old Port has been recently reconverted by Renzo Piano, the famous Italian architect. Genoa has a lot of buildings and places worth visiting such as the Maritime Museum, the biggest museum in the world of the kind, the Aquarium, and the XVI th century palaces in Via Garibaldi.
For sports lovers we suggest some outstanding facilities which are but a short distance from Pietrabruna: the golf links of Sanremo and Garlenda, the tennis courts of Imperia, Arma di Taggia and Sanremo, and the numerous riding schools such as” Mulino Martino” in Dolcedo and Sanremo.
For those keen on sailing and swimming the “Circolo velico”(“Sailing club”) and the swimming pool in Imperia, for people fond of diving the sea beds off Ventimiglia are highly recommended for their exciting and rich tapestry of deep sea marine life.
For mountain bike enthusiasts we suggest the wonderful routes in the Argentina Valley run by “Argentina Bike”. In the Arroscia Valley the fearless can go paragliding in the vicinity of Colle San Bernardo di Mendatica, or kayaking in the waters of the Arroscia stream, in the series of gorges situated between Montegrosso Pian di Latte and Ponti di Pornassio, above all in the stretch between Ponti di Pornassio and Pieve di Teco, or practise free climbing in Loreto, in the Argentina Valley or canyoning in the Argentina River gorges.
Last but not least are our ski lovers: at about two hours’ distance from Pietrabruna you will find the ski slopes of Monesi, Limone Piemonte, Prato Nevoso and Frabosa.
Summer is a time when concerts and festivals particularly flourish. Whatever your musical tastes are, you will find a festival to fit it. Blues festival in Sanremo, jazz festival in Nice, classical music festival in Cervo. Not only music is catered for however. The local “sagre” (culinary events combined with music and dance) are characteristic of, and abound in, the region, where you can sample the regional cuisine and finest local wines at a reasonable price.
The Italian Riviera has something for everyone. You will never forget your holiday there.
