Description: San Polo is the smallest district in Venice and yet it is one of the oldest and most historically important. It includes the area of the Rialto which is bordered by the Grand Canal. In the IX century the very first venetians settled in the small islands known as the Rivus Altos or the Rialto that in just a few years became its centre, and the commercial and cultural hub of the whole city. In the following centuries wholesale and retail markets flourished, as did the shops selling luxury items and the banks, both public and private. Maritime insurance companies and specialist commercial and industrial tribunals also established their headquarters in the area. San Polo is still one of the liveliest districts in the city with its narrow little streets and numerous shops, bars and typical restaurants. The area is home to the famous and oldest bridge in Venice, the Ponte de Rialto. When the market in the Rialto grew in popularity a bridge was necessary to connect the two sides of the city and provide access to its tradesman. In 1181 a bridge was constructed out of boats, was later replaced by a wooden version around 1250, and in 1524 became the construction that is still standing today. A visit to the Campo San Polo is essential; one of the most famous squares in Venice. Formerly it was the site of different ceremonies and dog and bull fighting contests. It also marks the place Lorenzo de Medici was assassinated in 1548. Since 1979 the square is one of the central points of the famous Venetian carnival.
