The Southern Italy / Calabria region
Calabria is one of the most varied and interesting provinces of Italy. It is steeped in history with an interesting mixture of Greek, Roman, Norman, Arab and Albanian cultures.
Although not yet very well known to the international tourist, the region is well worth a visit as it is rich in both beauty and history with a wealth to offer. Over the centuries it has been constantly invaded giving Calabria a mythical feel.
All this has left its mark and Calabria today has a vast amount of architectural wealth and it is visited by many throughout the year. It also has great scenic beauty and the landscape is majestic with mountains reaching over 3000mt dropping dramatically to the sea. It is hard to imagine how such a variety of countryside can be encapsulated in one area.
The Gulf of Polycastro is one of the jewels of Southern Italy and includes quite a few already popular resort towns along its coastline. The bay extends from Campania south to Calabria with just an approximately 20 kilometre stretch in Basilicata. The terrain is mountainous, pine clad in areas with many beautiful secluded beaches. A few miles inland from the coastline is the National Pollino Park.
This is one of the largest parks in Italy and offers several up and coming ski resorts for the winter vacation. Here there are wonderful walks with hidden ‘tavernas’, characteristic restaurants serving local dishes, during the summer months.
San Nicola Arcella area
San Nicola Arcella is located in Northern Calabria and situated within one of the most beautiful bays in Italy called the Gulf of Polycastro. The historical part of San Nicola Arcella called ‘Centro Storico’ is perched above the natural harbour and Crawford’s Tower. This former Napoleonic fort became the residence for many years of Francis Bacon Crawford, a famous American author. There are several footpaths that take you down to the beaches below and during the summer season there is a shuttle bus to and fro from the village.
From the house a paved street leads to a beautiful piazza with restaurants and a lovely bar open all year round that serves freshly cooked croissants. Every Wednesday there is a market offering fresh produce and typical local artifacts. Fresh fish caught early morning by the local fishermen can be bought daily.
Long stretches of lovely beaches and coastal footpaths can be found together with interesting inland villages perched high with sea views over the Gulf. Within the bay is Dino Island which in the last few years has become an established marine park. This imposing spur of rock is inhabited by Primula Palinuri, a protected species of flower and one of the rarest in Italy. Dino Island is also famous for its many sea caves especially the Blue Grotto.
Praia a Mare is just a five minute car drive north of San Nicola Arcella and has a lovely, long beach bordered by a very smart ‘lungomare’ with a cycle path. The town offers many sports including parasailing, paragliding, horse riding/trekking, scuba diving, jet skis and a water theme park.
Apart from excellent shops, bars, live music and restaurants, Praia is also well known for The Praja World Festival, the name which has been given to the international ethnic music review held here each summer. This is an event which showcases a stream of both established and emerging artists.
Diamante is a pretty coastal village famous for the ‘Festival of Chillies’ and ‘Murals’ and about a twenty minute car drive south of San Nicola Arcella. These murals have been painted since the 1900’s by famous artists on the sides of houses in the historical part of the town.
Here every culinary dish can have a’ chillie’ touch whether sweet or savoury and they taste superb. During the festival, which is held in September, all the neighbouring villages come here together to host their culinary delights. The town is alive with dancing, music and dining.
