The Southern Italy / Calabria region
Holidaying in Calabria is a very relaxing holiday away from it all you return feeling that you have had a real holiday. Further down the coast into Calabria are large unspoilt sea side towns, large towns and of course Sicily. The region of Basilicata has been described as ' Italy's Best Kept Secret' and most of this beautiful region is the National Pollino Park. Its coastline is breathtaking with pine-clad mountains reaching down to the sea, and a landscape of citrus groves and vines.
* Amalfi and Positano are in easy reach further up the same coast line. * Sicily is just a couple of hours away by road or train. * Maratea is a small town overlooking the Gulf of Polycastro, full of old world charm and character with narrow winding streets and beautiful buildings, Maratea is known as the ' Jewel of Basilicata' as the town and surrounding hamlets are a delight to see and stay in. * Scalea is the largest town in the area with large supermarkets and many shops there is an excellent long sandy beach which stretches for miles. * Praia a Mare in the day enjoy the long sandy beach and at night the many inexpensive restaurants or mingle with Italians as they walk along the new promenade with its palm trees or in the town in the evening with its beautiful tree lined pedestrian areas, bars and of course the famous Italian Ice Cream parlours - gelateria's!
San Nicola Arcella / Bridge Village area
Situated high above the town of Praia – a- Mare and the small village of San Nicola Arcella is the unique Bridge Village with its pretty multicoloured houses. These properties are ideal for families holidaying with young children because of the many facilities on offer. A club card can be obtained to use the swimming pool, tennis courts, aquatic sports and crèche facilities (during the holiday season) which are 3 minutes walk from the Villa. A mini bus goes at regular intervals to the beach below. There is also a supermarket and a 24hr security surveillance system. The small town of Praia a Mare offers many shops of all descriptions which stay open at night until late. It also offers the second largest Aqua Fans in Europe as well as go karting and many other leisure pastimes including Scuba diving.
* Scuba Diving at all levels is popular around here - the Bay of Polycastro beneath the villa which is a marine park, famous for its coral reef and Dino Island which is amarine sanctuary and is viewed directly in front of the Villa * Pony Trekking and White Water rafting are available nearby. * In Winter there is a ski resort only 1 1/2 hours drive away. * There are many quiet coves and sandy beaches to explore. * Southern Italian food is excellent and great value - the seafood in the area is amazing * The people here are really friendly and welcoming

Guestbook
MAY 2007 Mike.M - Barry South Glamorgan
‘We stayed in La Meta for two weeks in May 2007. The villa itself is spacious, cool and comfortably furnished with a large terrace which offers both shade and sun and also a balcony off the main bedroom. Even at that time of year we were able to eat on the terrace most days. The most striking feature is the view from also every aspect of the villa and which takes in the beautiful colours of the Mediterranean and the beach at Praia a Mare.
La Meta is in Bridge Village which is a mature development of prettily coloured holiday villas built on a hillside and at the time we were there it was very quiet and peaceful.
Praia a Mare itself is just a few minutes away by car and boasts a very long shingle beach and also a lovely tree lined centre with many shops. Five minutes in the other direction is the town of Scalea again with a long shingle beach and also the Centro Historica which is the old part of the town and well worth a visit. It is also worthwhile taking a trip inland where there are lots of hilltop towns and villages and impressive mountain scenery.
All in all we had a great two weeks in an area where the people are very friendly and the contrasting scenery a delight.’
JUNE/JULY 2007 Brenda and Tony, Lanark, Scotland We stayed at the villa with 3 teenagers at the end of June into July and had a brilliant time. The villa fully met our expectations. It was spacious, bright and airy on the inside. The views were absolutely stunning and it was a pleasure to relax on the terrace and enjoy looking out to sea and along the coastline. The villa also had lovely gardens that we made good use of, particularly in using the barbeque which the girls enjoyed doing. The facilities within the complex were also of a high standard. We made great use of the swimming pool and bar area both during the day and in the evenings. There were a range of other activities in the complex such as tennis and football. The girls enjoyed the entertainment at night and made friends from a whole range of countries, they enjoyed the experience very much.
The villa is in a great location for accessing villages and resorts along the coast, I would recommend hiring a car to see as much as you can of the surrounding area. It is a lovely area, lovely scenery and some interesting history as well as plenty to do. It is still very traditionally Italian and this is part of the charm as you wander around the historic old town in Scalea. The people are so friendly and eating out is pleasurable and not expensive.
The owner of the villa was exceptionally helpful and gave us lots of useful advice and tips prior to our visit. It was very easy to get to the Villa from the airport and all the arrangements were in place when we got there, it really was hassle free!
I would highly recommend staying at the Villa and we would hope to be back some time in the not too distant future.
JULY/AUGUST 2007 Douglas Main Lincolnshire
We had a great time. Of particular note were the villages of Diamante, and Maratea (both the Centro Storico in the hills, and the Porto in the small bay). Praia Mare was pleasant for an evening walk, with plenty of shops and market stalls for the girls. (Scalea market - Mondays - was also worth a walk, just for the atmosphere! - it is just opposite the Spar in Scalea)
We found several good beaches (we even used a public beach - umbrella is at the house for future use!!). Favourite Lidos were at San Nicola(to the left of the road at the bottom), and the Lido Vera mare (Bridge Village beach), which was always quiet, and had the bonus of being a short pedalo ride from Dino Island!
MAIN FAMILY JULY/AUGUST 2007
Hi, we spent 2 weeks at the house in late July, August. We had lovely weather, very warm and lovely sunshine. The house was very spacious for us, as a family of 4.
The views from the house are fantastic, great to open your shutters in the morning and have a straight view to the sea. We spent all of our time at the house, outside and made use of the back terrace and outside lighting at night.
The swimming pool near the house (3 mins walk) is lovely, never too busy and very clean. You do need a swimming cap when you go in.
Scalea is the largest town and has a good spar supermarket. The old town is well worth walking up to. Lots of nice bars and ice cream shops in the pedestrian area in the main town and we visited a lovely restaurant at the edge of the town, near the evening market. We visited other neighbouring towns and Maratea town and port were lovely.
English not spoken in many places at all, but we managed, and we are not Italian speakers. The beaches are clean and well serviced with food and drink, well worth paying for the sun beds and umbrella.
All in all we would welcome the chance to go back and would recommend it to many people. a car is essential for this house.
Main family.
We ate very well, both cooking for ourselves and out. The restaurant at the bottom of the hill past the office was very good, but not cheap (we probably ordered too much!), and the 'Antica Osteria' in Scalea (at the San Nicola end, on the way back out of the one way system, under a cliff) was excellent.
The pool was well used, and we could not say enough about the young staff there - they worked very hard(day and night), and we saw a few of their 'shows', which were very good, even without translation! (they organise a regular boat trip to Isola Dino, culminating in being dropped off in a tiny bay in San Nicola for a swim - spectacular views, and good fun - again even without translation!!)
The house was a perfect size for us,and the views were spectacular! The rear patio was well shaded for lunch, and well lit for dinner.
