The Tenerife region

Tenerife is the largest of the canary islands. A typical volcanic island with a very interesting landscape made up of hills and valleys. The highest point being the majestic Mount Tiede (which is also the highest point in Spain).
The surrounding area is a National Park with pine forests and" lunar" landscape. The North of Tenerife is tropical and lush with flowers and shrubs every colour of the rainbow, whilst the South of Tenerife is more dry.
There can be snow at the higher areas and Mount Tiede can often be seen with snow covering it's peak and in winter time even the whole mountain making a beautiful sight on a hot sunny day in the South! We have seen snow as close as the hills behind the house - The weather in Tenerife like other parts of the world has been changing of recent and we do find that especially in El Roque we have very definite seasons. The winter can be quite cold, although the weather just 20/30 minutes away at the coast is warmer.
attractions to the visitor and it is certainly not just a place to go to sunbathe or party! (although that can be nice to
get away from the cold climate of your native country in the Winter months). A nature lovers paradise with plenty to see, home to some rare birds. Due to European funding the roads are very well kept and driving around the island is a pleasure, the area around Tiede is quite diverse, remember to take a jumper, it can be quite cold up there!
The San Miguel de Abona / El Roque, Tenerife area
El Roque is a quiet village between San Miguel de Abona and Valle San Lorenzo. The house is situated in a sheltered area, with views of the rolling hills, and a view of the sea from the roof terrace. The crystal clear air is wonderfully envigorating and you are close to nature. On the main road towards Valle San Lorenzo there is a wonderful restaurant called Mirador La Centinella, with panoramic views of the south of Tenerife towards the airport in a beautiful area where walkers & hikers get the best views! A great area to hike, see www.tenerifehiking.com
Comments about the Mirador on Tenerife forums say that if you don't go anywhere else you have to get there and
see the spectacular views, and we are just five minutes drive form there!! (see www.tenerifetimes.com) There is a para-gliding school just nearby, a riding stables, endless possibilities for walking and as mentioned before it is a great starting
place to visit all the attractions of the island, which include: Loro Parque, in Puerto de la Cruz, Mount Tiede, Siam
Park, europe's largest Water park, Dolphin & Whale trips from the harbour in Los Cristianos, Wind Surfing in El Medano, Santa Cruz the Capitol, with lovely shops (even a Marks & Spencer & Ikea). We have a collection of travel books for you to browse in the house. Other restaurants of note are Meson Era Las Mosas and Paraiso in
Valle San Lorenzo, five minutes drive. El Roque also has it's own restaurant just up the road, specialising in Canarian cuisine.
There is a bus route in El Roque to enable you to go out without the car locally. Details in house.

The house is located 20 minutes away from the beach and the resorts. It has a nice view to the surrounding hills and a wonderful garden. The suroundings are really quiet. We had some trouble to find it the first time we arrived based on the directions provided by the owner but it all worked out fine in the end. The house is clean and well equiped. The kitchen had all the necessary appliances. There are two bathrooms which are clean and functional. The garden is great and we spent most of the time outside. There are sun beds and a children pool as well as a very nice jacuzzi which we have enjoyed a lot. The owner provided us with good information on the restaurants and supermarkets in the area and it was really easy to get organised. The only problem we had was the smell in the house which bothered us for the first days until we got used to it. It is an old house, the climate is probably humid especially in winters and since the house is not lived in all the time it needs more time to be aired. This might be a problem for people with allergies or asthma. But, this did not really spoil our vacation. We had so many things to do , visiting arround the island and we actually spent time inside only in the evenings. We have travelled with two kids aged 8 and 10 and they had a great time playing in the pool and arround the garden. All in all it was a good experience. Response: The cottage is 100 years old, and not lived in all the time so in view of this we will request that the windows are opened before guests arrive to ensure it is aired better in future. Thank you for you comments. |
Guestbook for El Roque Rustic House
Thanks for the beautiful cottage and the very nice garden. Our first time in Tenerife was excellent with very good weather. Lovely hikes on the Island and nice car drives. The cottage feels like home, fully equipped and of course we really relaxed on the terrace and in the Jacuzzi! Thanks also for good and quick contacts by email and sms we would like to come back some day. Karin & Hans Steinen, Holland, Feb 2011.
We love your house and the view of the hills, the water storage tank with its eerie echo is brilliant! After rain you can see the water coming in the bottom like water through a mouth. You can walk up the hill in front of the house.
We had a fantastic 2 weeks in your house. A great house with all comfort, we will recommend to our friends.
Oct 2011 Arjen & Esther and kids from Denmark.
following the track to the most amazing views, quite a tough walk though, about 2 hours there and back. Eve & Oliver, West London, April 2011.
