The Campania region
The stretch of coast between Agropoli and Punta Licosa incorporating Santa Maria di Castellabate, San Marco di castellabate has long sandy beaches and faces the Amalfi coastline across the Gulf of Salerno; on clear days you get view stretchinh from Maiori in the east to Sorrento in the west and then the island of Capri and, slightly between and behind the mainland and Capri, the island of Ischia. There is plenty of holiday accommodation in the Cilento villas and Cilento apartments in this picturesque area. In fact, Cilento is an excellent region for peaceful, relaxing holidays away from mainstream tourism but within easy reach of the Amalfi coast and many historic sites such as Paestum, Pompeii, Vesuvius and similar.
Cilento is marked with solitary sandy beaches between bizarre rocks and facing turquoise and emerald-green water. Capo Palinuro and the coast of Marina di Camerota is certainly one of the prettiest landscapes of the Tyrrhenian sea. The name of the cape stirs from the helmsman of the Äneas, who was a barbarian resident killed in this area.
The coast has numerous bathing beaches, romantic bays and rock grottos. Many grottos can only be reached via the water. The grotto “the Porchi” can be reached on foot via the “Della Marinella” beach – this is especially recommended around noontime, as the light reflections are most spectacular then. The Grotto Azzurra lies between Capo Fortino and Capo della Quaglia.
Cilento area
When the harbour of Santa Maria became too small for the numerous fishing boats, the smaller town of San Marco which is 2 km away became more popular for living. Due to its favourable location, the ancient Greeks and Romans constructed a harbour, remnants of which can be seen all around the more recent harbour. In the forties, the new harbour was built in a picturesque setting with views over the whole bay and onto the old town of Castellabate. The waters are rich with fish from the gulf of Castellabate which is the first underwater nature protection park of southern Italy. This area secures the livelihood of more than half of the inhabitants as fishermen.
Today San Marco di castellabate is a lovely small Italian fishing town largely unaffected by tourism except during the summer holiday season when mostly Italians visit the area, although most stay in the larger nearby Santa Maria. The town has a small central Piazza with a colourful modern church and an old bell tower. The streets are typically Italian with a mixture of houses and some shops. There are a few good restaurants where you can eat at a reasonable price.
The town has a small beach but it is better to walk or drive (under 1 km) to the 2km adjacent Pozillo beach where you can walk all the way to Santa Maria along the beach. During the second half of July and August there is a direct ferry to the island of Capri from the harbour. At other times you can travel along the coast to Agropoli or Salerno to catch the ferry to the Amalfi coast.
