The Sicily region
A rich history, lagoon beaches and excellent hiking available - The northeastern coast of Sicily is among one of the most beautiful regions of this island world, with the Nebrodi Nature Park, verdant mountains, sand beaches and varied topography. In addition to the excellent swimming in the sand bays and lagoon beaches, the northeast coast offers a rich variety of recreational opportunities with its picturesque mountain villages enthroned up to 600 m above sea level, perched amidst the green hills, cool lakes and hardwood forests. The Nebrodi Nature Park is a hiker's paradise; it is Sicily's largest natural park and one of the most extensive nature conservation areas in Europe. There is a smooth and harmonious braiding of the dry summer landscape with the cool running brooks, springs and lakes. Tindari welcomes with its crystal clear lagoons and ancient legends. This Black Madonna of Tindari is said to have originated in Byzantium, and legend tells that a group of fishermen found it after it fell off a ship bound from the Orient, and handed it over to the local monks. Once upon a time this Madonna saved a child from falling on the rocks by causing the sand to rise from the sea, catching the child unharmed. This also explains the unusual sand formation. The beaches of Capo d'Orlando and Oliveri are among the most unusual and most attractive of Sicily. There is the general crescent shape sand bank, which contains a shallow lagoon surrounded by lakes.
San Marco D'Alunzio area
The hill towns of San Marco d'Alunzio and Santo Stefano di Camastra are especially memorable with their picturesque narrow winding streets, archaeological finds, and ceramic centres displaying traditional Sicilian ceramics and how they are crafted. One of the highlights when visiting these places is the panoramic view of the spectacular landscape descending to the sea with the Aeolian islands in the background. Surroundings: shops, bars, a restaurant in San Marco d'Alunzio about 5 minutes away. Swimming: In Torrenova (about 7 km) or Capo d'Orlando (12 km).
S. Marco d’Alunzio is a historical town 540 meters above sea level, located on the hills of the province of Messina. In the Greek epoch it was called Alontion, while in the Roman period it was called Aluntiu. The Normans called it S. Marco and in the XIX century, the name Alunzio has been added. In the Nebrody Park, a well-preserved and protected environment, S. Marco is above all a city of valuable historical art. The Temple of Hercules, built by the Greeks around the IV century B.C., is surely the most important monument for the historical-artistic point of view. It has probably been used for sportive activities in relation to the cult of Hercules. It is important to know that San Marco d’Alunzio, during the Roman period, had a big economic importance, so much to coin money itself. It has also been the military fortress in the Norman conquest of Sicily. Passed by the royal state property to the baronial state property, San Marco also belonged to the Filangeris that had built numerous Churches to flourishing the cultural life. San Marco D’Alunzio is a very important centre and a point of reference for the researchers and supporters of the art. In this village of remote origins, these researchers find again the tastes of other times, archaic perfumes, characteristic and uncontaminated angles. In various places of the town it is possible to admire breathtaking sights, to see a landscape that goes from Capo Milazzo to Monte Pellegrino (Palermo), and to enjoy the enchanting scenery of the impressive Aeolian Islands.
