About the home

Il Gufo Farmhouse in San Marcello Pistoiese is a perfectly restored Villa that respects the traditional architecture of Tuscany, with antique furniture and rustic interior features selected to maintain the warm atmosphere of the past.

There are 4 apartments, two for 2 people and two for 4 (all large enough to add another bed on request) .
Each apartment allows you to dine and relax, with a fully-equipped kitchen and open fireplace.

The 16 metre swimming pool, open from May to September, is built into the side of the mountain and follows the natural curves of the hillside. This site enjoys particularly spectacular views across the mountains, valley and neighbouring villages. It is 100 metres away from the house in order to ensure the peace and quiet around the apartments themselves.

Photos show Il Fienile, one of the two one-bedroom apartments. The sitting/dining room was originally the farmhouse hayloft, above the former stable. The sitting room and bedroom enjoy fabulous views out across the mountain.

The apartment comprises:
(60 m2: Sleeps 2-4) Large dining/sitting room with kitchen, open stone fireplace and sofabed (42 m2) + 1 double bedroom (12 m2) + a bathroom with shower, toilet, bidet and basin. Stone walls, high wooden ceilings with exposed beams, tiled kitchen with electric oven, four hob stove, refrigerator, freezer and basin. Adjustable heating. Private entrance. Verandah with wooden roof and terracotta tiled floor (25m2). Private garden with outdoor furniture (approx. 40 m2).

There is a large BBQ in Il Fienile's private garden, and a outdoor table to eat on the shelter terrace. 2 minutes down the track and you're at the pool...

The Tuscany / Pistoia Province region

The farmhouse is deep in the mountains in the relatively 'undiscovered' north of Tuscany. While still within easy reach of Florence, Bologna, Lucca and Pisa, the villa is perfectly located for wonderful mountain walks, horse riding and skiing in winter. There are historical villages to visit and also great local amenities.

Local villages are lively throughout the summer, with many Italians coming to escape the suffocating heat of Florence and surroundings. There are traditional village parties on most weekends- come and celebrate tortellini pasta, or admire local street art festivities! San Marcello itself celebrates its Santa Celestina in early September, sending balloons up into the sky from the lively main square.

Choose which of the distinct seasons to visit in- here we have heavy spring blossom, hot summers, smokey autumns and winter skiing.

The San Marcello Pistoiese area

The farmhouse is a 20 minute walk from the centre of the village. There are several restaurants in San Marcello Pistoiese, 3 banks with ATMs, pubs and bars, supermarkets, internet access, and everything you might need for your holiday.

There are some excellent restaurants in the local area. The most famous is said to have invented the sumptuous 'tagliata'- a fat and juicy cut of beef cooked in a special way. You can also try the restaurant with 7 taster pasta dishes, or another with inventive twists on traditional Italian cooking. Local specialities include Porcini mushrooms & wild boar- and don't foget bread, oil and wine!

From Florence take the motorway A11 to Pisa and exit at Pistoia . From there follow the signs for Abetone and after 23 km you arrive in San Marcello Pistoiese. Florence to San Marcello Pistoiese is a 50 minute drive.
The farmhouse is an 1.5 hours drive from Pisa airport, which has extensive budget airline connections to the UK and car hire. We are also 1 hour drive from Florence airport and 1h45 from Bologna airport. However, the efficiency of public transport also makes it possible to visit without a car; there are excellent train links from Pisa airport, Florence, Lucca to Pistoia and from Bologna to Pracchia. Regular buses from Pistoia and Pracchia come to San Marcello.
